    hey guys,

i need some help. i have an old vaio that i got a 500GB sata drive for, (was 80gb) and for love nor money can i get any OS to install on it. Ive tried installing win 7, xp and ubuntu. (originally xp)

it will take me into set up, but when it begins to load the software to install it, it just wont load any files. it all works ok with the old hard drive, but i want that for my nephews playstation.

ive tried wiping all partitions from it, and formatting it to ntfs, but nothing is working. i scanned the hard drive for errors, and it works fine if i was to use it as an external drive.

any ideas or recommendations? im baffled.

Are the BIOS settings reflecting the Hard drive bus, ie sata.

Set the drive to AHCI in the BIOS

Did you change your boot order in the bios . You need to get into the bios and change it to boot from cd / DVD or usb if you are using a memory stick .

for some reason i cant do this, its not allowing me to change anthing hard drive related. probably because its a laptop?

and yes, i have it booting from optical, it begins install set up but its not writing to the disk, it gets stuck during installation

I would suggest try to use a usb memory stick for the install or buy a new dvd and burn an installation onto that .

again, its not the burn, i tried 3 different OS's and all are the same. they all go into the install menu, but when it begins the actual install after putting in my settings, it just doesnt install. the progress bar stays at 0%. these are all freshly burned discs.

i put a low level format on it again, and ill update the bios to see if that works.

It could be the DVD drive acting up then . If you could get a memory stick and use windows usb tool to format it for use as bootable stick . Also get your iso's for my digital river . I find them to be the best iso's to use for reformatting .

i will try to boot from usb, but its not the dvd drive, because it will load any of the OS's onto the old 80 gb hard drive.
