Disability Allowance & Capital Means

Why, and on what basis do the Department believe they have a right to assess a person's car as part of their capital assets?

It is a wasting chattel, a depreciating asset, etc...

Further to this, to request a copy of the policy of insurance as proof of owning a car...

Bit of a strange one... maybe I am missing something

There is no basis. They can, however, glean more information from the policy of a car which could lead them into other areas, for example to see what named drivers there are on the policy (potential cohabitant) amongst other things.

I've never, ever heard of this. Do you have a classic car collection or something? When and where did they ask you for this?

Do you have a flashy car? new 141 ? Perhaps he thinks your hiding your means, anyway the 50k limit for DA is very generous anyway so a car alone wouldn't put you over.

No, not me, but a person in the community.

Lady lives by herself with home help, I understand. Does very little milage. Wife has cup of tea with her now and then.

I take the point about the investigating cohabitation - that makes sense in a way.

I was asked to provide evidence for a means test re; DA. No mention of a car. Maybe some fussy type in the dept. Lady probably won't have any trouble unless it's a Lamborghini or Jag!
