Sky box no card

Sisters tenants quit the house leaving a sky box with no viewing card and obviously no subscription
    Is this box any use?
Can I bring it home and connect my two boxes via wifi or Ethernet? Or will I tell her to shove it in a box in the attic?

If you hook up the box to a satellite dish, you should get the FTA channels.

    Only if it's a non-HD sky box.
Otherwise you can source a "freesat from sky" card.
It will unlock the FTA channels.
They cost 20 in the UK but aren't available here.
A friend in NI or ebay might be your best bet.

Asking this for a friend who is on Sky and as I have Freesat and FTA and never had Sky, just want to make sure my info is correct..........

He is wanting to change from subscription so just to get my head around this, he can remove his Sky card and he will get all the FTA channels if it is a non hd box?
Does the box have to be re-scanned?
Will he get the Channel 5's?

If it is a HD box he will have to get a "freesat from sky Card", (which seem to be available on e-bay), to receive any channels? Again is re-scanning necessary?

I am aware that to get the Irish stations he will need a Saorview box and aerial.

If it is a non hd Sky box, can he just remove Sky card, try it for a week or so and if not happy, just re-insert Sky card with no problems?

Am I correct or are there more issues I am not aware of?????

    Thanks.

Remove the card, unplug it for 2 to 3 mins and plug it back in without the card. It should but up with 101 on bbc, 105 will be ch5 etc...if it does then your good to go with it.

Just return the card and unplug and reboot again to return his sky channels....you will need either an aerial and saorview box for the irish channels or a saorview compatible tv..
