After finding that I have chance of a mavic ksyrium wheel rebuilt when in London next week, does anyone know if I have a chance of bringing my rear wheel in a wheel bag on Aer Lingus as carry on? Maybe if I remove the cassette?

Aer Lingus are one of the more mellow carriers for hand luggage, I have taken guitars as carry on without paying for the instrument when booking and sometimes my airport shopping is huge. Only issue is that does a wheel bag fit in the locker? I think they would. Cork is a lot more mellow than Dublin.

I'm going from cork. Thanks lads. Might book it in just in case.

What time is your flight? They tend to make everyone check stuff on the busier flights (the 7am from Cork and the 6pm from Heathrow). If it's one of the midday ones, you could be all right.

It is around midday. If I'm a cheapskate, I could bring it through to the gate having checked in online and plead ignorance if stopped! Have always found them pretty relaxed at cork when we have been travelling with the kids

Yea, I'd chance it. That flight is very rarely anywhere near full.

Did you fly with the wheel as carry on?

    Any issues with the airline?

I did. On the way out the plane was full and I had it by my feet and the stewardess was not happy. On the way back I booked the very back row and it was fine as I was on my own. Just tuck it under your arm (in a wheel bag)as you board and they won't notice. Obviously let the air out too!
