If it's upland, boggy, or surrounded by conifer plantations you're in trouble. I know a lot of people living in the East Clare hills who are infested and plagued by midgies every summer. I'm talking CLOUDS of little black intensely annoying and biting insects that get in your eyes, up your nose, down your neck and trapped in your hair. Nothing whatsoever you can do apart from wearing a strong insect repellent.

When you say 30/40 actual flies though, maybe that's not the same thing? It must be due to the type of land though - what kind is it?

Thanks for the quick reply, yes the land around is quite boggy and there is conifer plantations in the area,i know you mentioned midgets but these are actual flies like youd see in your house or even bigger, why are they attracted to these area's?The drains on the land are full,i thought this might be a reason?.Our neighbours which we are separated by with a small plantation of conifer dont seem to have the same problem with flies??

Well, they're unlikely to be the same kind as house flies I would have thought, if they're just swarming in the middle of a boggy area. It could be the drains alright. I'd say your best chance of finding out why they're there is to catch one when they come back again, identify it and find out what it's habitat is. If they're not midges then you stand some chance of altering what it is about the area that they like - maybe planting in certain areas, if it's the stillness or movement of air on that land that encourages them to be there rather than at the neighbour's! I'm no expert though. You've no dead deer or sheep carcases sitting about have you?!

Not that im aware of!!There definitely not midgets, the strange thing is that the field im talking about is not boogy at all and the surrounding land is pretty much dry in the summer.

I still reckon your best bet is to catch and identify. At that time of year I would presume they're mating and reproducing in areas that suit them. Perhaps there's a kind of vegetation that their larvae eat on your land but not on your neighbour's, and you might be able to find out what that is and get rid of it?
