How often do you wash your face?

I have oily acne prone skin, which is going a bit haywire at the minute (I'm chopping and changing foundation, trying to find the right one again, so think that is why). I'm also out running more than usual with the nice weather and find I am washing my face up to 3 times a day. Could this be potentially bad for my skin?
I picked up the Effaclar micellar water today so hoping to use it twice and wash my face once in the evening, hoping this will be a better approach.

I'm open to being corrected but washing your face with product 3 times a day will make your skin produce even more oils. I know it certainly works like that with hair- the more you wash, the more oil and sebum your hair produces. Meaning you probably wash it more and then it produces more oils... if you have to shower halfway through the day I'd say just leave out the facewash for that shower, and try using a cleansing cream once- i don't know anything about the product you mention, sorry.

Thats what I'm thinking baby and crumble, all the washing is having a negative affect. Its the only way I feel its clean though... I saw a mitt on Xpose today which requires NO facewash/cleanser - the fibers break down oils and dirt, anyone tried it?

I have typical combination skin, I've come to realise- very dry across the cheeks and forehead, oily nose. I've found that to keep 'both parts' of my skin happy I cleanse in the shower in the morning with a foaming cleanser and if I have to shower again or if I get rained on (yes my skin is that sensitive to water!) I just use a cream cleanser or a wipe to lightly clean. Maybe even just using a toner after your shower instead of washing might help?

I have never thought to just not wash my face when in the shower, how ridicules is that?!? I just do it automatically.

The LRP micellar water is soap, alcohol and paraben free so I'm guessing its going to be much better for my skin then soap and water, or creamy cleansers which I sometimes use.

I hear you about sensitive skin! It was recommended to me recently to take a course of antihistamines to see if it helps.

Look up the Foreo Luna Mini, I bought one of these recently. It's a non abrasive device that provides a deeper clean than your hands/cotton pad/ wash cloth. It's a bit expensive but might be worth the investment.

Maybe just use hot water and a face cloth in the evening if all your makeup is removed already?

I wash my face twice a day - once in the morning and once at night.

Three times a day is excessive to be honest and that is the cause of the problem. The more you wash your face the more natural oils you are stripping away and as a result your skin is then going into over drive to produce more oils. The products are drying out your skin.

What about just using water on your face after a run? Just, plain, clean, simple water on its own?

For my own skin - in the morning I use a micellar water to cleanse, then I rinse my face with plain water, and then pat dry. I then use a Garnier cleanser and toner, and then a Botanics moisturiser and then I use the Avene thermal water which helps with redness, sensitivity etc.

These are the products I use

The Botanics creams are actually for dry/normal skin but they work amazingly on my skin (combination), they've really helped my skin since I started using them.

There's also a mini version of the Avene water which might be better to try before purchasing the full size one?

Also, if you want to try new products etc I recommend reading reviews of them on www.makeupalley.com as the reviews are pretty accurate and it helps when trying to decide what to try next.

I also use this at night, after the micellar water if I have been wearing make-up.

You need a tiny amount, pea sized drop maybe and it lathers up nicely and leaves the skin nice and soft and clean.

I wash my face twice a day cream cleanser in the morning and oil cleanser with a double cleanse in the evening. I tone twice a day too. Don't wash your face in the shower, the temperature is too hot for it. Take a look at Caroline Hirons website she recently posted an article on oily skin.

My friend swears by never letting water at her face and her skin is amazing now and has really improved. She cleanes with a milk morning and night. If she does need to wash her face she does it with bottled water. If she uses the water from taps or the shower her skin breaks out and becomes really dry

How does she avoid tap water in the shower?

I cleanse twice a day; in the morning with a Ren cleanser for blemish-prone skin, then a double-cleanse at night with Garnier micellar water to take off my make-up, then again with the Ren cleanser and a La Roche Posay toner. Thanks to the advice of the ladies here, I think I'm on the right track regarding cleansing!

Which cleanser are you using? Do you use scrubs very often? You could be using products which are too harsh on your skin, stripping the oils so they come back with a vengeance, creating more oiliness.

I know it's definately excessive and I do feel like I'm compromising my skin. I wear sun cream when I'm out jogging and I think I would need product to get a proper clean. I used the micellar water today after it and also used LRP thermal water. Should I use the micellar water in conjunction with cleanser for a better effect? This is my first time trying it so any tips on use would be great! Also is water and facewash any worse than cleanser/ toner/ micellar water etc?

I'm guessing the micellar water needs to be used with cleanser and toner!?!

I use La roche posay effaclar facewash. Use a scrub once a week.

I was also using Dr Hauschka rose day cream for a little while after excercing as the weather was so bad my skin would become quite raw afterwards.

Yeah I find that the micellar water isn't quite enough for a thorough cleanse for me, so I do a proper wash as well. I only use an astringent toner once a day though, twice daily is too much for my skin.

Well I doubt you're exfoliating too much, although would you try a chemical exfoliator such as the Clarins Doux Exfoliant instead of a scrub? Is the LRP cleanser the cream one or the foaming one? Foams can strip oil as well.

Is the Dr Hauschka cream very heavy? Some moisturisers can be quite heavy on oily skin.

Oily skin is such a pain, isn't it?!

I have stopped wearing make up and the skin has cleared up tremendously. Was using sunscreen over last few weeks and it went backwards. Roche Posay products are great particularly the effaclar duo. Found the effaclar cleanser a bit harsh though. Washing Three times is too much.

Guys just wanted to update on this. I'm washing my face once a day, sometimes less and am mixing my effaclar with silcocks base (recommended by beautician), using LRP micellar water, LRP thermal spring water and my usual LRP moisturiser and I cannot believe the difference in my skin in the space of a week. Alot less oily, no dry patches, my pores have completely shrank and I can see a glow I never noticed before. Also started a course of antihistamines. Delighted with the change! Thanks for all the helpful advice!

Delighted you got it sorted, it's mad how much difference a small change in routine can make!

Its insane! I've always looked after my skin and have had the same skincare routine for years just never occurred to me that I needed to change, I just put it down to my skin changing and how it was reacting to the elements!! I only wear make up at the weekend and can't believe how well its sitting on ny face now!

I guess it stands to reason that our skin's needs change as we get older! :)
