Myself and mate disagree. Does anyone know from experience on the travel forum?

I've seen traffic wardens in Italy cities, most of them are women and IIRC the most fearsome thing they carry is a handbag. There are also local cops and then there's the national police the carabinieri who most definitely do carry guns.

No but the finance police do (they are the ones who can ask you to show a receipt when you leave a shop, to make sure the shop is tax compliant)!

As the previous few posts shows, there are a number of different police forces in Italy, each with a different flashy uniform. I can well imagine that someone thought that if the guys in blue with the frilly hats were cops then the guys in green with the gold braiding must be traffic wardens.

I thought a travel forum might have a native Italian or some observant intrepid travellers who might just be able solve a light hearted wager or a trivia fact for a well visited foreign country.
As for The E.S. forum, by its very name it would have less than this forum to do with Traffic Wardens. Stronger hope of an answer here I hoped. Finding fault with a post and then posting an even weaker suggestion for an answer is just a bubble burst

They are not traffic wardens, ie people who give out parking tickets, but they are the city police (policia municipale) in Florence and the pith helmets are worn particularly when directing traffic as that aids people in seeing them.

Thanks for the replys. Think we'll leave the thread there unless one of you is going to Italy and might ask!

Sorry if bubble burst - not my intention.

E.S. suggestion was meant to be constructive - some of the posters over there seem to have a fierce interest in what forces have guns ( & what types of gun etc )
