Unfortunately that kind of loyalty has little chance of working today and belongs to another age of football.

Nowadays so much of a clubs income is based on sponsor deals and European TV/prize money. If you have 3/4 bad seasons in row, never mind 6, sponsors will stop signing big deals and it will dissolve away. That money is needed to make the signings to get the team back in Europe and challenging for the title, fergie did it in an era when clubs still made their money from gate receipts and player sales and so long as you were a reasonably wealthy and popular club as united were this money didn't go without being relegated.

When a team is performing badly, Loyalty is more like a gamble today and shouldn't necessarily be viewed as a sensible righteous thing to do when concerning football management.

True, Moyes's contract is for 6 years so he won't be given a 7th season without having won the PL! :pac:

Thiago is out for Tuesday's game,ah well that means they'll just have another superstar to come in.

If Rio starts the next night Im definitely watching the game from behind the couch with a bottle of Jim Beam in the hand.

I say it wont even go noticed in Bayern with the quality they have.

Bayern could even afford to give Neuer a rest today. Plenty of fresh legs Tuesday :(... And hands.

Rio and Vidic is the only hope I think. Playing together I feel they might just still have it in them to perform for 2 legs against Bayern. Obviously they'd still be huge favourites to get multiple goals but even with their bad performances this season they have played together for so long it's United's best hope imo. Play Jones in the deep midfield role with Fellaini beside him. If Rafael's not fit he's a huge loss, selling Fabio was so silly. Kagawa has to play, and through the middle. Him and Rooney with Welbeck and whoever out wide, after his performance off the bench today I'd pick Januzaj even though I've been critical of him, he looked a lot sharper today than he has for a while but I doubt Moyes will go for him.

I'm stupidly getting my hopes up again for them probably to be dashed but sure what else am I going to do?

I wouldn't let Rio near the team on Tuesday, his token gestures of blocking off players and turning his back on those running at them is infuriating. In his prime he was so good,he didn't need to tackle and could simply nick the ball away and play it upfield. He can't do that anymore but hasn't adapted his game.

I'd actually prefer Carrick at CB to him tbh,Carrick would actually be more of a liability in midfield as Bayern would simply pass the ball around him and rule him out of the game altogether.

We need to go with the likes of Kagawa in order to provide a link between our midfield and the frontline. As Big Jack used to say,"we need to inflict our game on them",not start as if we've been smoking skunk all day and end up 2 down before we even realise we are on the pitch.Against a mediocre Villa team it took us nigh on 20 minutes to get a quality ball into their box.

It's Saturday night, 3 days before the game, and I'm already nervously excited about it, a set of games many believe we'll lose by 5 or 6 clear goals.

You'd have to think there's going to be no middle ground, it'll be either a massive Bayern win or United doing the complete impossible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,071 ✭✭✭user2011

    Yes, lots of times.

They added a new one as well - "stand up for David Moyes, stand up for Davis Moyes..."

Notices this post got no thanks.

    Glory hunters on boards.ie

They should switch off all the lights at OT and then Moyes walks out to the Undertaker's theme music.Game won before it starts:D

I am old enough to remember the early SAF times. There's no comparison to now. SAF was a proven winner. You could see ongoing improvement & what he was trying to achieve. None of this applies to Moyes.

This, just gimme something to get behind and i'll follow him. Blind faint nah not for me.

So overall. How was our performance? I missed most of second half with work. Villa are basically as good as Bayern though right? So we're sorted yeah?

Benteke missed a sitter to make it 2-2. Claims for Villa peno at 3-1(I think)

We deserved the win in the end, but had they got level might have been different game.

    We took our chances.

Tbh i don't really think any of the games left will have that big an influence on whether Moyes stays or goes. I think its clear that the older statesmen in the squad don't really buy into him so the question for the board is simply whether they think that if he gets to rejig the squad can he win. If they think he can then i don't think the bayern result will have any real effect on their decision at the end of the season.

Odds are he's gonna be there next season.

I just wonder if the board will see this through and give him the money to buy his team rather than struggle on with Fergie's one, many of whom clearly don't have an interest in playing for Moyes and are just seeing out the season.

He's already made his statement about the current team and despite the hand wringing by some,in fairness he's not far off the mark.Fergie performed a miracle by winning the league with them last season - how many can remember us playing scintillating football last season? We just got the job done.

It's absolute top drawer players that need to be brought in,we can't simply go with the mantra of buy young & develop in order to see a profit in the future. We are a big club so it's time to start acting like one.Bayern,Madrid,Barca, even City ffs aim to get the best & don't look down the line at selling players on for the good of the bottom line financially.

Moyes seemed more confident today I thought. Post game interviews about Tuesday saying "we've got to the quarter final, now let's make the semi final" type of stuff. Talking about the challenge "bring it on".

Mightn't seem alot to most people, but talking in a more confident tone makes a massive difference.

You re dead right. Theres a big difference between getting behind a struggling manager going nowhere and getting behind a struggling manager who is showing some sign of getting things right. Liverpool at the start of last season looked like a bit of a shambles but you could see that Rodgers was trying to implement a new, attractive style of play and it was worth persevering with. We, on the other hand are showing no sign of positive development. People have to stop comparing Fergies early days with Moyes. Different times, different managers, different players etc etc etc. I was quite happy when he took over that he may take time to implement his ideas and get us playing good football, but once we were playing good stuff I would have been happy even if we werent winning the league. But the way things have gone is unacceptable

Januzaj looked very good when he came on. Theres so much attacking potential in that team if the defence and midfield could be sorted out. Its mind blowing that we have struggled so much this year in attack when you consider the players we have. With Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj, Rooney, RVP, Hernandez, Welbeck, Nani etc we have no excuse for only scoring 22 home league goals so far!

'Older Statesman' like who? If you're talking about Rio they guy has been a shambles this season and Moyes should have made a mark by cutting him loose.

Despite all his posturing last season Rooney has stepped up to the mark and delivered consistently this season. He is the future.
