Dublin City Centre - Worse Internet Than The Sticks

I'm finding this unbelievable: It would seem that huge sections of D1 and D2 are relying on ancient dsl lines with nothing resembling modern broadband available. It is impossible to get UPC, and Eircom apparently have absolutely no intention of upgrading to efibre for a whole swathe of the city centre. Check out their map:
    http://www.eircom.net/efibreinfo/map/

That whole grey section in the middle has no plans for upgrading for the foreseeable future. Does anyone know why this is? Is it just because they can't do roadworks in places that busy? Do they have to pay expensive permits? Magnet seem to be offering no better than Eircom.

It is very sad that the centre of the capital would be held back like that, this is a real headache for the business I am in and it seems like I have very few choices for broadband.

If you see Spacetimes posts in the VDSL threads its actually harder to implement VDSL in central urban areas than it is in suburban areas. In a housing estate the cabs are on curbs and in cut outs in walls and on green spaces. In D1 and D2 most of them are underground. If you watch your feet as you walk around you'll see places with 4 and 5 eircom manholes in a row, AFAIK thats a UG cab. This is a lot more work to upgrade, and space may be a problem. Also the civils are likely a lot higher.

Spacetime has made the suggestion that such areas might be the first on FTTH and I'd have to agree that that makes sense.

The original plan was that "urban" areas were to be all done using FTTH, however this plan seems to have been quietly shelved...
