Best place to sell a Rolex?

Hi folks, first time in this section....
I got a Rolex a few years ago for my 30th, it's still in its original display box and was only ever used for a few special occasions (have tag aquaracer for day to day use).
I've decided to sell it but am a bit anxious of where to sell it. Was thinking ebay, but will someone really make a legit offer there at its true value? But at least paypal is safe?
Then I was thinking adverts, but I have a thoughts of dodgy people giving, me a load of dodgy notes....

Am I over paranoid or is there a better place to sell a high end watch?

Adverts.ie is free, so you may as well stick up an advert. Just try not to pull your hair out with the stupid offers. If you're worried about getting dodgy cash, do the handover in a branch of your bank and lodge it to your account with the buyer present.

I wouldn't use eBay. Not only will the fees sting you, but there's a chance that someone will claim you sent them a fake and get a refund from you.

Chrono24.com might be worth a shot - I've no idea about the fees or the selling experience, but it seems to be one of the most popular watch classified sites.

    Thanks Eoin,
Just looking at chrono24, they sure have a lot of watches...
This is the exact same as mine, except mine is blue/navy.
Is it a fair price? I've read that a lot of the prices on that site are high?
    http://www.chrono24.com/en/rolex/oyster-perpetual-14233--id2634538.htm
costs 50quid to list... and they give a money back if not sold within 6 months... might go there actually!

IMHO I don't think it's a good judge D. I've found the prices on chrono24 vary all over the place and the dealer prices are often well over priced. I recall looking at one model of watch where the prices went from 1900 euro(private seller) to over 3000 euro(dealer) and the latter was in slightly worse condition. On watch forums the same model would be had for 18-1900.

I've noted the prices people will pay/expect varies across markets by quite a bit. EG I've noted German folks will pay a little more than US folks for the same watch(maybe 10% more). Depends on the brand name too, though not so much in your case with a Rolex. The nice thing about them is they tend to be consistent in price across markets.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I put it up here, I'll try chrono24 later and report back :)

    Damn...
I've just put it on adverts... do you think its terribly overpriced?

I don't think so D. You'd get that price or close to it all day long in the wider world. In Ireland its harder to say. Watch aficionados are few enough in number, or we hide ourselves from the normals. :) If Adverts doesn't work for you you do have the wider world available through Chrono24. Good luck with the sale anyway.

I see you also posted in our watches for sale thread. I was about to do that for ya, but you beat me to it. Finally a real Rolex on that page. ;):D

I'm thinking I might post up how its going, maybe someone else selling a watch may find it useful...

Ok, eventually got it listed on Chrono... payment of 50€ given and if the watch does not sell within 6 months I get it back. https://www.chrono24.com/en/rolex/rolex-oyster-perpetual-14233-blue-face-goldsteel-strap--id2709152.htm

Very happy with the emails from chrono24 including one on security that helps assure me
Chrono24 – Your security is important to us!

    Dear Chrono24 user,

We would also like to provide you with comprehensive information relating to security since that you have chosen to offer a high value watch on our online market. We will send you our service email on security filled with helpful tips that can protect you against attempted fraud.

Please take note of our suggestions for international watch sales and read the current security information on known cases of fraud. This will help ensure that your ad is a success!

General security information for selling high value watches

    - Be careful if the buyer asks you to manage the transaction through an obscure escrow service. While there are reputable escrow companies, unfortunately most escrow sites are faked.

    - Please keep in mind when making a sale using Paypal to check that the payment has been irrevocably credited to your account before delivering the merchandise. Do not rely on confirmation emails from Paypal but check your account statement online.

    - When accepting pre-payment via bank transfer, please make sure that the funds have been credited to your account irrevocably before shipping. Only rely on statements from your own bank regarding the arrival of funds.

    Be very careful!

The following cases describe known tricks used by fraudsters that have been frequently reported:

    - Be careful with potential buyers that offer a personal handover of cash in Northern Italy (Milan) or Brussels (Belgium).

    - Be careful if someone offers you more than your asking price.

    - Be careful if the buyer wants to pay via cheque from a foreign bank. While your own bank might add the funds in your account at first, if the cheque bounces, the funds will be deducted from your account and you may have to pay an additional fee.

    - Be careful with buyers from Nigeria. Especially if you receive an alleged letter of a bank, which confirms the payment of the buyer and prompts you to send the goods to complete the money transfer.

    - Be careful if you are contacted by a potential buyer via SMS. With fake e-mails from PayPal or other credit institution such as Royal Bank you will be asked to make a refund to the alleged buyer.

    Current security information

Unfortunately, there have been some recent attempts to defraud sellers of premium watches. Sellers are contacted by a supposed buyer and are persuaded to meet the buyer at a location (generally Milan, Turin or Brussels) where the watch will be handed over for the sale price, paid for in cash. Through various schemes, the buyer manages to pay the seller with counterfeit bank notes – and the valuable watch is gone.

This scam (known as a “rip deal”) has been used for years in the used car, boat and real estate sectors. The scammers now also seem to be targeting sellers of premium watches.

So we advise you to use particular caution with prospective buyers who:
    - Propose a cash transaction in Milan, Turin or Brussels
    - Offer dubious additional business dealings (exchanging currency, “laundering” untaxed money, etc.)

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other security questions. We are happy to help.

We hope you have a successful sale!

    Best wishes,
    Your Chrono24 team

Happy out so far, but then I get this email this morning from Chrono24 (still no contact from any potential buyers, but it has only been up about an hour!)
Thank you for your ad on Chrono24.

Your advertised watch "Rolex Oyster Perpetual 14233 Blue face gold/steel strap" is a particularly nice object and, in my opinion, can garner a good price in one of the upcoming Chrono24 Live Auctions.

I would estimate your watch's hammer price at EUR 2500 .

More information about Chrono24 Live Auctions can be found here: https://www.chrono24.com/en/info/auctionata.htm

If you are interested in our offer, simply reply to this email (non-binding) or email oliver.hoffmann@chrono24.com, and I will get back to you shortly. You can also reach me by phone at +49 30 9832 0222.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Yours sincerely,
    Dr. Oliver Hoffmann
Watch expert of Chrono24 and Auctionata

I've asked him for more info, but in the mean time what do you guys think?

I'm also in the process of putting the watch up on ebay, but you need to go through rigmarole to extend your money monthly limit above 700. Total fees to sell on ebay with a reserve is about 100. If this chrono auction comes in at 50 it may be the way to go, no? Or should I stick with ebay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭paddyh117

Interesting - I have no experience of selling on either eBay or Chrono24, but if it were me I'd stick to Chrono24 - they've a good website & reputation, and the Auction idea also looks good

just my 2c - best of luck

Just heard back from them.... seems they will take the watch from me now and put it up for auction in may. The will clean and photograph the watch. If successful in sale I will pay them 24% comission and if unsuccessful I will pay them 5% of the valuation.

Also, looking at their site, a buyer will also pay 24% so they actually make 48% of the sale price!!!! I'm in the wrong game!!
thank you for your initial interest. As member of the Watch Department of Dr. Oliver Hoffmann, I would like to give you the questioned informations how the Chrono24 and Auctionata auction works:

    We already estimated your watch.

We would pay the insured transport of your watch.

When the watch is arrived in our house we clean it and our specialized team of photographers make high-quality pictures of it.

The next watch-auction, where we still have free lots is on 28.05.2014. In general our watch auctions are successful auctions with hundreds or thousands of bidders from all over the world which are interested in buying high-quality watches. Our cooperation with Chrono24, the world wide greatest platform for watches, is here also essential, amongst others the thousands visitors of the website see the countdown for our auctions and in particular your watch.

About a month before the auction the watch will be part of our online-catalogue and we make on- and offline publicity for it.

The catalogue can be seen from every place in the world 24 hours every day in the week and it is possible to give absentee bids.

Big advantages to Ebay are that we offer you our professional presentation of your watch and that we make publicity for it. Also is your watch one of 120 and not of thousands. But we have at least some hundreds till thousand prospective buyers in every watch auction, also the old collectors which don’t trust Ebay or Internet and who comes here in person or want to bid per phone. Also do we verify our buyers and if they don’t pay we have a juristic department who cares about it. In addition the watch is insured in the time here over our insurance and, an addition for the buyer, we give a guarantee for 25 years.

In general we start the auction at 50% of the estimated value.

    · If your watch is sold in the auction we would take 23,8% commission, for high value watches this is subject to individual negotiations. This commission includes all costs like transport, insurance, etc. and will not be due before selling.

    · If the watch is not sold in the auction it is about ten days available in our online shop for the starting price+40%. This price includes all dues of the buyer.

    · If the watch is not sold after these days you have the choice to still offer your watch in our online shop or to take it back for a withdraw fee of 4.76% of the estimate price.

In every case you get the costs for the announce at Chrono24 back with signing the contract.

If you are interested I would like to send you a detailed contract.

If you have questions to the conditions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. You will also find some more informations and records here: http://chrono24.auctionata.com/en/chrono24-auction-calendar.

    Best regards,

    Juliane Beyer

    Assistant Watch Department

Think I'll try ebay first.... 100quid if i sell and 2 quid if I dont!

    24% of the commission

    Crazy...

    24% of the commission

    Crazy...
Ahhh..... The take 48% of the money paid by the buyer. Then the buyer pays 2.1% art tax and and delivery.....
I'd be lucky to get 45% leftovers...
EBay is crashing as well, can't get it listed yet, this a feckin ordeal, thinking bout keeping it at this stage. :(

Are you sure its only 100 on a 2500 item on ebay? Friend sold something for 1000 once and it was aprox 100 for that with ebay plus separate paypal charges.

Also id guess you will need better photos than those to get the really high bids. Consider hiring a professional - or at the very least maybe checkout the "Macro Mode" function available in most compact cameras. You cannot really see the condition of the piece in those photos. Good luck with the sale!

I have a good dslr I can try and take better pics, I thought mine were good though.
I could be wrong but only had a quick look at ebay terms, but final value commission is 10% up to a max of 95euro. Likewise insertion fee can go to a max of 3 euro. So it should never be more than 100 approx.

I should really pull the finger out and stick it up...

Jez... finally got paypal to increase the selling limit on my account from £700.
Went to list the item on ebay and seems I am now limited to £750...
Currently on ebay live chat support....
    Victor Prendergast
Welcome to eBay Live Chat. My name is Victor. How may I be of assistance to you?
    Victor Prendergast
    Hello xxxx
    xxxx
Hi, I am trying to sell a watch for 2700 but ebay says I am limited to £750
    Victor Prendergast
xxxx, for your information, eBay accounts are automatically reviewed on a monthly basis and a selling allowance increase may be granted based on your account performance.
    Victor Prendergast
These allowances allow us to protect our sellers, our buyers and our community as a whole.
    xxxx
Is it possible to sell my watch on ebay?
    Victor Prendergast
We have a specialised team to address the issue and I am sure the team will be able to address the situation to your satisfaction.
    Victor Prendergast
Shall I transfer the chat session to the specialised team for further & better assistance?
    xxxx
    Sure, if they can help.
    Victor Prendergast
Thank you for the confirmation. Please stay connected while I transfer the session to the team.
    Victor Prendergast
    Has transferred you to:Jack Power
    Jack Power
Thank you for contacting eBay Live Help. My name is Jack. Please give me a moment to review what you've discussed with the previous representative.
    Jack Power
Hello xxxx, I understand you want to sell your item for an amount that exceeds your selling allowance. Please bear with me for 2 minutes while I check this for you. I'll be with you shortly.
    Jack Power
Thanks for waiting xxxx, I've looked into this and can see that you have just verified your details and have recently increased the selling allowance of your account to 25 items or £750 from 10 items and £700.
    Jack Power
I hope you understand that we put selling limit on your account so you will be able to focus on your transactions. Starting out small helps you to become familiar with eBay. It’ll also give you confidence in completing a sale successfully and ensure a positive experience for both you and your buyer.
    xxxx
I dont know why they only increased my monthly limit to 750... I told them as I am telling you that my intention was to sell a watch that is valued at 2700?
    Jack Power
I'm sorry if the selling allowance increase was not what you hoped for, but I hope you understand that when you request for a higher allowance, it reviews your selling performance.
    xxxx
Jack I've been a member of ebay since for 12 years... I don't want to "start out small" in terms of running a business. I just want to sell a watch... Is this not possible?
    Jack Power
I do understand that you have been a member since 2002 and I really appreciate it but since your account has not been selling for quite sometime, there is a limit on your account. Now since you want to further have this increases, you may get back to us after 30 days so we can manually review your performance. At this time, I suggest that you list other items.
    xxxx
I don't have anything else to list...
    Jack Power
If you want to, you may list your item as an auction with the longest duration and who knows, you may get more than the buy it now price you want to sell your item.
    xxxx
So if an auction goes above my monthly limit that is acceptable?
    Jack Power
    Yes xxxx, this is acceptable.
    Jack Power
By the way, here's a link with some tips on how to close a sale and to keep your buyers coming back. We want to make sure that you’ll enjoy selling here in our site. You may visit our Help Page at the following link:
    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/seller-tips.html
    xxxx
    Thanks

So seems ebay is not really an option to sell a high end watch unless you start as an auction with no reserve... which could be ok I guess but quite the risk!!

This is really becoming an effort to sell :(

    Oh But it gets worse....
Yes you can list your watch for auction without reserve but if you intend to ship outside the country you are registered in you must sign away any rights and agrgee to get stiffed if the deal goes south... even if the buyer is a scammer... or at least that is how I read this!
    International Selling Agreement

Please read this Agreement carefully before proceeding to list your item. You are receiving this Agreement because either:

    · you are listing an item for sale on an eBay site other than your eBay site of registration (for example, you are registered with www.ebay.co.uk but are listing an item for sale on www.ebay.com); and/or

    · you are listing an item for sale with an international shipping option (such as worldwide shipping), which may result in your item being sold to a buyer on an eBay site other than the eBay site where you are listing your item for sale.

You must agree to these additional terms and conditions before you will be allowed to list items for sale on eBay sites other than your eBay site of registration and/or list items for sale with an international shipping option (such as worldwide shipping).

PARTIES. If you have a PayPal account, this Agreement is between:

    · You;

    · eBay – specifically, the operator of the eBay site where you sell your item, if not your own eBay site of registration. For items sold on eBay.com, you are contracting with eBay Inc. For items sold on any of eBay’s E.U. sites, you are contracting with eBay Europe S.à.r.l. For items sold on eBay.in, you are contracting with eBay India Pvt. Ltd. For items sold on an eBay site outside of the U.S., E.U., and India, you are contracting with eBay International AG; and,

    · PayPal – specifically, the PayPal entity with which you have entered into a User Agreement to receive the PayPal Services. For example, if your PayPal account is registered in the European Union, you are contracting with PayPal (Europe) S.à.r.l. & Cie, S.C.A.

If you do not have a PayPal account, then this Agreement is between you and eBay only.

APPLICATION TO ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE LISTINGS. This Agreement will apply to all of your active or “live” eBay listings, including Good ‘Til Cancelled listings, and any future listings that you list on an eBay site other than your eBay site of registration and/or list with an international shipping option (such as worldwide shipping). If at any time after accepting this Agreement you no longer want these terms and conditions to apply to future eBay listings, then all you have to do is refrain from listing additional items on an eBay site other than your eBay site of registration and/or refrain from listing additional items with an international shipping option. Also, if at any time after accepting this Agreement you no longer want these terms and conditions to apply to your already active or “live” listings that you listed on eBay sites other than your eBay site of registration and/or with international shipping options, then you must end those listings in accordance with the listing site’s policy for ending listings early. For example, if you listed your item on www.ebay.co.uk, the U.K. eBay site’s policy would apply, but if you listed your item on www.ebay.com, the U.S. eBay site’s policy would apply.

PAYMENT HOLD NOTICE: PAYPAL FUNDS FROM YOUR U.S. AND CANADA EBAY SITE SALES MAY BE UNAVAILABLE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. For items that you sell on the U.S. and/or Canada eBay sites and for which you are paid through PayPal, you accept this paragraph as PayPal’s notice, and agree, that:

    a) If PayPal believes that there is a risk associated with you, your PayPal account, or any or all of your PayPal transactions, then pursuant to the “Payment Hold” section of your PayPal User Agreement, PayPal may hold the funds you receive into your PayPal account from each of your transactions on the U.S. or Canada eBay sites for up to 21 days, or in some instances longer. You may view the text of the “Payment Hold” section that applies to your PayPal account in your respective PayPal User Agreement.

    b) PayPal will consider a number of factors in evaluating if there is a risk, such as if eBay considers you to be a seller who does not meet certain seller standards, or you are a new PayPal customer and/or eBay seller or have a limited customer/seller history with PayPal and/or eBay. You may review additional information about the circumstances under which payments will not be immediately available for items you sell on the U.S. eBay site here and for items you sell on the Canada eBay site here.

    c) If you use a PayPal account registered in a country outside of the European Union, you agree that the PayPal entity that operates the PayPal website where you registered your PayPal account, in its sole discretion, may place a hold on any or all of the payments you receive when it believes there may be a high level of risk associated with you, your account, or any or all of your transactions, to the extent and for so long as reasonably needed to protect against the risk of liability; that this may in turn suspend, block, limit, close or cancel access to PayPal’s services (such as limiting access to any of your funding sources, and your ability to send money, make withdrawals, or remove financial information); that its determination may be based on a number of different factors and may rely on information it receives from its third party partners, such as eBay; that, if it places a hold on a payment, the payment will show as "pending" in your account; that, if it places a hold on any or all of the payments you receive, it will provide you with notice of this action; that it will normally give you advance notice of any suspension or cancellation but may, if it is reasonable to do so, (for example, if you are in breach of its user agreement with you or it considers it advisable for security reasons), suspend or cancel your right to use your payment instrument without prior notice to you; that it will release the hold on any payment after 21 days from the date the payment was received into your account, unless you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal or it takes another action permitted under its user agreement with you; that it may, in its sole discretion, release the hold earlier under certain circumstances, for example, if you have uploaded tracking information; and that it may continue holding the payment in your account if you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal, until the matter is resolved pursuant to its user agreement with you.

EBAY BUYER PROTECTION POLICY. For items sold to buyers on eBay sites other than your eBay site of registration and that have eBay Buyer Protection policies, you agree to be bound by those other eBay sites’ respective eBay Buyer Protection policies, which may be different from the eBay Buyer Protection policy (if any) on your own eBay site of registration. Among other terms and conditions, if a dispute arises and cannot be resolved between you as a seller and your buyer, eBay will resolve the buyer’s complaint pursuant to the eBay Buyer Protection policy on the eBay site where your item was sold. This includes being liable to eBay for any and all amounts refunded to your buyer under that site’s eBay Buyer Protection policy. To view a list of the eBay sites with eBay Buyer Protection policies, as well as the terms of those policies, please click here.

LISTING FEE REFUNDS. If an eBay Buyer Protection policy dispute is resolved in favour of your buyer and your buyer receives a payment under the eBay Buyer Protection policy governing the eBay site where your item was sold, unless you have voluntarily given your buyer a refund you will not receive a refund of your listing fees from eBay.

PAYMENT AUTHORISATION. If you sell an item on an eBay site other than your eBay site of registration or your item is sold to a buyer on an eBay site other than the eBay site on which you listed your item for sale, and the buyer pays for the item with PayPal, you agree to the following:

    a) AUTHORISATION TO CHARGE YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT

You authorise eBay, or any eBay affiliate appointed by eBay, to charge your PayPal account for the full amount of any money you owe eBay under an eBay Buyer Protection policy (the “Authorised Amounts”) on a one-time, sporadic, or recurring basis.

    b) YOUR INSTRUCTION TO PAYPAL

You authorise and instruct PayPal, or any PayPal affiliate, to debit your PayPal account for all and any Authorised Amounts and to pay eBay, or any eBay affiliate appointed by eBay, such Authorised Amounts. You acknowledge and agree that in all circumstances you reasonably expect that payments made pursuant to this section are variable and may be made on various dates. You further agree that PayPal is not obliged to verify or confirm the amount that eBay presents to PayPal for the purpose of processing the payment of any Authorised Amount.

    a) CANCELLATION

    (i) As explained above, if at any time you no longer want PayPal to debit your PayPal account for future Authorised Amounts, then all you have to do is refrain from listing additional items on an eBay site other than your eBay site of registration and/or from listing additional items with international shipping options (such as worldwide shipping). Also, for already active or “live” listings that you listed on eBay sites other than your eBay site of registration and/or that you listed with international shipping options, you must end those listings in accordance with the listing site’s policy for ending listings early. Alternatively, for listings not yet active or “live,” you may withdraw this authorisation by emailing PayPalReimbursementOpt-Out-EU@ebay.com, using your registered eBay email address, providing your eBay ID, and stating your intention to opt out of PayPal reimbursement. Your withdrawal will be effective within one business day, after which time eBay will not use your PayPal account to recover amounts that you owe due to another eBay site’s eBay Buyer Protection payments. However, as a consequence of withdrawing this authorisation, eBay may prohibit you from listing items on eBay sites other than your eBay site of registration and/or from offering international shipping on your listings.

(ii) If you use a PayPal account that is registered in the European Union, this payment authorisation is without prejudice to your right to cancel a recurring payment pursuant to the “Cancelling Recurring Payments” section of your PayPal User Agreement.

(iii) You will remain obligated to pay eBay for all unpaid amounts, and eBay reserves the right to seek reimbursement through other means.

AUTOMATIC PAYMENT METHOD. eBay may require you to have an automatic payment method on file with your eBay site of registration. Where there are insufficient funds in your PayPal account balance and where you have designated PayPal or another payment method as your automatic payment method on your eBay site of registration, you authorise eBay, or any eBay affiliate appointed by eBay, to charge your automatic payment method (and, if PayPal is your automatic payment method, any payment methods or funding sources linked to your PayPal account) for all and any amounts eBay paid to your buyer for claims resolved against you under an eBay Buyer Protection policy, subject to the terms of the billing agreement governing the use of your automatic payment method. If eBay, or any eBay affiliate appointed by eBay, is unable to charge your automatic payment method, you agree to reimburse eBay in full and in a timely manner for all and any amounts eBay paid to your buyer for claims resolved against you under an eBay Buyer Protection policy, subject to account sanctions, up to and including account suspension and termination, for failure to reimburse eBay.

AMENDMENT. With the exception of subsections (a), (b), and (c)(ii) in the above “Payment Authorisation” section, eBay and/or PayPal may amend these terms at any time in accordance with your eBay and/or PayPal User Agreements. Additionally, eBay will notify you via the Messages section of My eBay.

MISCELLANEOUS. The laws applicable to this Agreement shall be the laws governing the User Agreement of your eBay site of registration, except for the above “Payment Authorisation” section, which shall be governed by the laws that govern the PayPal User Agreement applicable to your receipt of the PayPal Services. To the extent that there is any conflict between the terms of this Agreement and the User Agreement for the eBay site with which you are registered, including, where applicable, the eBay Buyer Protection policy for the eBay site with which you are registered, these terms shall prevail. If you accept this Agreement, a copy of the Agreement will be sent to the email account on file with your eBay site of registration as well as the Messages section of My eBay.

You need to agree to this to sell worldwide!

    Bottom line... ebay suks!

Now I know why I've only ever bought from ebay and have never been tempted to sell on it. No way would I do now, not unless it was a very low sub 100 quid item. Thanks Deegs for the info and general heads up to their practices.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Also id guess you will need better photos than those to get the really high bids.

Glad you suggested this. There has been a lot more activity on my watch this week on adverts with the new photo's compared to last week with the old photo's!

With the eBay stuff, you can change settings about where you are willing to sell.

I have mine configure to sell to EU and North America Only.

It also asks do you want it visible to to other domains like .com, .au etc.

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

You could try Dawsons Jewellers OP? Or back to Adverts?

I actually took it off adverts, nothing but hassle...
Had an offer an accepted but your man obviously got cold feet and messed me around...
    Its not worth the hassle.
I'll just leave it on Chrono24 but I'm not sure about selling such a watch, I wont make any major effort and look to get my 50€ back in 6 months.
