Hey all. Been thinking bout joining the cadets for along time. in final year in college now and basically just wondering should i apply to the recruits or not. Is it possible to apply for the cadets if, on the very slim chance, i would be selected??

You can apply for the cadets as a private. But you cannot progress in career from private to officer. I think the two paths are separate from the start.

Other can provide better details. But if you want to be an officer, apply for the cadetship.

Xios is right you cannot go from a private to an officer, but you can go from a corporal to an officer I think (you can in the reserve anyway). But I don't think the are taking application for cadetships at the moment, they are however recruiting again.

Would you consider going in as a private and working your way up the ranks?

You can still apply for a cadetship if you are a Private (or even NCO) in the PDF, the same process is the same as a civilian applying. If you get selected then you'll be discharged from enlisted service and then go back in and start again from scratch as a cadet.

They used to run a Potential Officers course in the PDF for NCO's, but they don't happen that often. I don't even know when the last one was.

If you want to be an Officer you would be better off waiting for a cadetship. In the Irish army the chances of getting commissioned from the ranks are very slim. Even as an NCO it rarely happens so my advice would be to either wait for a Cadetship if that's what you have your heart set on. Alternatively if you just want to soldier then apply for an enlisted position and take your chances, however slim they may be.
