Watched it tonight in the IFI, and it's one hell of an experience. Hell seems like the optimum word, since The Yabba is like a true (and at some points seemingly inescapable) nightmare. It's probably the most intense hangover ever put on screen, John Grant falling deeper and deeper into a rabbit hole of madness, violence and alcohol (lots and lots of alcohol). An exaggerated but raw deconstruction of both Australia and masculinity. It never descends into straight up horror - bar maybe the difficult to watch kangaroo cull - but it's truly unsettling viewing.

If you can't catch it in the cinema, the Blu Ray is coming soon. It's a truly fantastic and unique rediscovery.

Saw it recently. The restoration was outstanding, it looked impeccable for a film made in 1971. Still not sure what to make of. Don't know if I'd go as far as Nick Cave in deeming it "the best... Australian movie in existence".

Promising start which then ended up being a laughable mess. And the inclusion of that scene was idiotic IMO.

    From wiki:
    Spoiler
The hunt lasted several hours, and gradually wore down the filmmakers. According to cinematographer Brian West, "the hunters were getting really drunk and they started to miss, ... It was becoming this orgy of killing and we [the crew] were getting sick of it." Kangaroos hopped about helplessly with gun wounds and trailing intestines. Producer George Willoughby reportedly fainted after seeing a kangaroo "splattered in a particularly spectacular fashion". The crew orchestrated a power failure in order to end the hunt.
