The registration for the Sean Kelly tour in August opened this weekend. Just signed up myself. Is there no jersey this year or did I miss it when I was registering.

Do this instead, does Ticincor, hard part of Nire climb, Mahon falls and seskin plus a few more.

Harder route, but very well run and nice club

Got a Strava or other route map? I've missed the SK registration also, but to be honest and event on August 10 would suit me better.

If you've missed the SKT - as an alternative the Carrick Wheelers Sportive is fantastic - i did this last year and thought it was a great day on the bike. The route is stunning, with some lovely climbing and the numbers participating are small so no issues with groups bunching up on the climbs.

    Full details here: http://carrickwheelers.com/?p=3064
Here's a route map from last year: http://www.strava.com/activities/57733375

Alternatively the Tour de Kilkenny, next saturday 2nd August might be an option for you! (although I might be a bit biased there being involved there) ;) There are 110km and 160km route options with close to the same amount of climbing at the SKT / Carrick Sportive.

Did I hear correctly that on the SKT 160, there a cut off time at a certain point on the route, that all cyclists must reach, otheriwse that's the end of thier day??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭Junior

Afaik you need to hit the Mahon Falls before 3pm or they turn you straight for Dungarvan. It's been that way with a few years, and it's understandable why.

Most of the route is OK. First 40Km is flat. There is one steep hill after the foodstop.....its a b**ch but short. After that there are a few long drags out of Ardmore and Ring but they are OK. Knockanore is the one but if all else fails you can walk.

Did the 100k last year. Yes, the climb shortly after the Knockanore food stop is a tester and I did see several people walking it as I went slowly by.
Get into lowest gear early, take your time and just trundle your way up.
After that there's nothing too scarey. There's a bit of a drag after the last water stop and another longer drag right near the end, that seems to catch out those with tired legs (so keep a bit in reserve for that 1).
All in all, it's a lovely spin.
Just be aware, that it all gets a bit mad at the start, as some of the faster lads do seem to kill themselves to get past the slower and less experienced while we are bunched up.
I'm trying the 160k this year (god help me!)

    Thanks.
Depending on where you live, but if you were close, it's worth having a go at the knocknanore climb, so you'll have no surprises on the day.
Caught me out last year, having only trained on long drags and not steep sharp climbs. I managed it.... but only just!
Alot fitter this year and have been working hard on steep hill climbing for the 160

Does anybody have a link to a route profile or strava trace for the 100 and 160 routes. Can see the map on the website, but don't know where the climbs are or how steep. Perhaps I'm better off!

What sort of distance and climbing have you done to date for this year if you are doing it of course??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,776 ✭✭✭✭fits

Doing the 100km. What sort of riding would be good this week?. Thinking of just doing two hilly 30km trips before Wednesday and then break of a few days before the event.

I am doing it but not looking forward to the pain!

As a rule of thumb I try to do training rides around 50k with at least one proper climb and aim for around 500m climbing per 50k as a ratio ( we visit Donegal regularly which is good for your climbing!). It definitely makes you stronger but I'm not aiming for a3 status, as they would laugh at such a regime. About 5000km per calendar year is my aim My wife thinks I'm obsessed but there's much worse people!

I do about 8 sportives a year but August is busy and my family is losing patience.

Don't worry too much about the Sean Kelly and do it at your own pace. If you race it like some sportives ( Leinster Loop) it will be horrible and I wouldn't make it round. You'll always find a like minded group in such a big event.

One word of note is that someone put tacks on the descent from Mama Road last year and we had to slow to wait for a mate to catch up. If you see a beaten up purple Mistubishi keep around there watch the roads!

I did it last year and thankfully just missed the thumb tack incident...
I have been doing regular 50k to 60k spins with about upping to 1000m climbing the past few weeksbut not in a club, similar annual distance so ill be interested to see if I can improve this year...
I blew up last year read someone else's Strava and got it into my head it was only 1400m climbing in total and it fecked up my event.......

Also interested in the week before preps...
I have done about 1350km and at least 15,000m in the past 6 weeks..didn't do anything the weekend purposely missed the Leinster loop (Hi Mick if you're peeping in) thinking of 2x30km sprints Monday and Wednesday or rest up totally??
    cheers

I'm doing the 160. Going to lay off the bike from Wednesday onwards. Tbh I'm dreading it - suffered on the w200 due to overtraining / tired legs, so hopefully the few days rest will do me good. Done a few sorties and relatively long spins so hopefully enough in the tank.

With that base then you will have no problem. It's definitely worth taking a few days rest beforehand if anything just to make you look forward to getting back on the bike again.
I couldn't sprint for 30k ever. Would probably struggle over 300m!

Oh yes, by the way do not sprint up Tickencor. Take it easy up that one

It's the first hill, no need to worry about it. It's just a little rise in the road. Then a flattish bit and then a little bit more uphill.

That's how I'm convincing myself that next Sunday is worth it.

It gets your heart rate up but you're right it's only 10 mins of torture. Just resist the temptation to tear it up as you turn to go up it and stay right to avoid getting trapped when lads start going backwards.
