So I am suffering from depression and anxiety due to not being happy in my job, I don't want to go out sick cause I want to look for a new job and get better.

Can I leave my job and then go sick, my plan would be to give myself a couple of weeks of some counselling and medicine and look for new jobs then when I feel better.

If I go into social welfare with sick certs from my doc will they query my job history or anything, I am genuine sick, I have been to the doc and he wanted to sign me off work but as that is the problem I felt leaving, getting some help and trying again would be better in the long term.

Is this an ok thing to do or will I not get paid from social welfare?

Charlie if the GP says your unfit for work then you must take his advice. The GP will fill his part of the cert and you fill in the rest. You don't have to meet or discuss it with anyone at the SW office yet. Just put it in the post box down at the sw office or even post it to them or ask someone else to drop it in.
You won't get any illness benefit for the first 6 days. If you do not have enough prsi for illness benefit you can see your cwo for a payment.
Don't forget to send your boss a doctors cert as well. There's no need to quit just yet.
If you happen to find another job which you like while you are sick you can give your notice then.
For now just do as your GP advises.

Thanks MrsByrne, I was just worried that it might be ages till I find another and would my current employer give me a bad ref saying I was out.

I don’t want to mess anyone around either the employer or the social welfare people and wondered was it illegal or something, I heard if people leave their jobs they don’t get paid but cause I want to leave and am sick I thought it might be ok till I get better.

I was sick with this before and got better once I got rid of the stress factor and the medicine kicked in so I’m pretty hopeful.
