After me recommending the stanley cara in other posts, this evening when cleaning out the stove I notice this huge crack in the side baffle.

I'm a bit pissed off as its a "Stanley" and is 2.5 months old.
Needless to say I will be on to the shop where I bought if from tomorrow morning.

    Anybody any experience with this.

    Hi ya,
Am interested in your post,as we have just put a deposit on one,is that the firebrick with the crack in it,we were told by the supplier, that they do break & can be replaced but are not covered under the guarantee...
can you please let me know how you get on with Stanley.

The fire brick comes in 4 pieces and its fine on mine its the ribbed steel baffle that's cracked on mine, these can be easily removed and are about 8 or 9mm thick.

Quick update, I called the shop and I've to ring stanley, he said they are good to deal with, give them the serial No and then they should post out the new parts.

What fuel do you mostly use in it out of interest ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭robertxxx

Mostly, bord na mona stove fuel, then briquettes, coal, logs, turf.

But not much as I've only have it 2.5 months, so I was basically trying different types of fuel.

Stove damage can be caused when the stove is not operated in the correct manner. It is vital that the stove operator reads the manual and understands exactly how to operate the stove and not overfuel the stove and overfire it too. Also using the wrong fuel type in a stove causes damage and voids warranty. This is how most serious damage and stove parts failure happens on stove instalations or with stoves. You have to "break in" a stove and slowly heat it up.Read the stove instruction manual folks.

And what was his verdict on why they cracked

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭robertxxx

He hadn't one, he has seen stuff like that before but couldn't explain why it happened.

I asked was the metal made in china and he said yes, so I put it down to that.

He asked questions, took measurements, stripped it down had a good look and checked for a down draft.
He said the first fire of lasting 1/2 hour should be small, which it was, so that the fire cement could set right.

So i get a letter from Stanley today

    Here's what they said.

    Dear Robert

Im writing to you concerning the recent installation of a cara stove at the above residence which was inspected by our local engineer (name). (name) has highlighted the following issues with the installation that will need to be rectified to ensure that the unit can be used safely and operate within its normal/designed working parameters. If the engineer has deemed the installation unsafe and it should not be used until these issues are addressed:

.Clearance between the stove and wooden surround is less than the recommended distance - see attached relevant pages of manual.

.Engineers test highlighted a leak on the seal between clay pot adaptor and chimney.

.Intermittent downdraught noted on chimney - suitable cowl should be fitted.

Please note that the warranty on this product is now void as the unit does not conform to our installation requirements or building regulations for this type of product. Should you require any more information regarding any of the above, do not hesitate to contact a member or the service department on 051-302333.

    Yours sincerely,
    Stpehen gallagher
    Technical service manager.

What type of coal were you burning before the cracking?
Also it might be better to remove their staff member's name & number from the post.

I understand what you were told. I was wondering as I have the same stove. I am surprised to see that Stanley say you can burn any fuel as nearly all others say only smokeless or timber.

Did the supplier install the stove contrary to the manual?

Yes, but the existing wooden mantel piece the distance wasn't there.

Where in the manual does it state you warranty will be void if you don't follow exactly?

Also why do they state English and welsh building regs?

I'm thinking of suing stanley for false advertisement for stating their stoves are built and made in Ireland.

Which is false as they are made in china and the uk and are owned by a English company.
