Phone Line 'Unable' to Support Broadband?

    Hi guys,

    quick one...

    Recently moved to Ashtown (Dublin 15) and been trying to get WiFi broadband in my house. After a very lengthy wait with Eircom I finally got seen to be a tech guy who reopened our closed telephone line. I never heard from Eircom after that but called them in the end. They had me passed two every tom, dick and harry in Eircom to be finally told after 2 hours that my line is unable to support broadband. I find this hard to believe as I live in Dublin.. I'd understand if I was in a remote part of Ireland but this is a bit nuts.

    Does anyone have any advice on how to remedy this? I got a dongle but it's woeful.

    you are lucky that you are not paying for it, i have wireless broadband, this evenings reading from speedtest, ping 1.45, download 0.45, upload 0.85,

    I had the very same problem in Drumcondra back in 2008. Was told that the lines were "rotten" and only good for voice, not even dialup or ISDN. Could only get 16.8k on a dialup connection!

    If it weren't for UPC I'd have been stuck with a 3G connection. Absolute madness for a capital city.

    Remoteness of part of Ireland has nothing to do with it.

    It's down to the length of the line and the size of the exchange. There are a few tiny exchanges in North County Dublin and at least one that was never enabled for ADSL.

    If they have local line faults they need to fix them though.

    I had a similar issue with BT in North London, couldn't get above 2mbit/s ! After a significant amount of endless phone calls, emails and complaints they eventually fixed the line which turned out to be water-logged i.e. it was sitting in a puddle somewhere underground.

    Sorry, I was in a rush and didn't really detail what happened.

    Basically, the line is able to support broadband, it was just an admin slip-up. Eircom are a bunch of idiots.
