    Hi Folks

Another quick question. Said I'd open a new thread instead of continuing my previous one about payment options.

What's the general opinion on this car? I would be looking at 2005 to 2008 models. I need a station wagon for our purposes, and this one seems to fit all the requirements (big boot, nice drive, reliable(?) etc.

AFAIK the 1.6 HDi Peugeot engines are known to be very reliable and long-lived. Any model we would be buying would have circa 100,000 miles on it. As long as timing belt has been done, is there anything else I would need to look out for or worry about with this model of car in general ? Anyone own or has owned one?

Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks
    Schnooks

I had the opposite experience with that engine.

Experienced DPF failure, Turbo failure and needed a clutch in around 50k miles..

It got a good bit of town driving which wasn't ideal. But its a reasonably complicated modern engine and when things go wrong with it they go spectacularly wrong.

I would go back in the years slightly and pick up something more reliable like an A6 avant etc

The 307 is hit or miss around reliability especially with electrics. You could get a trouble free one but you have a higher chance of buying trouble too. 1.6 HDI can give trouble too especially if not looked after properly. While they are not without their issues an Octavia Combi would be a better proposition imo or if budget permits then a Kia Ceed estate.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm surprised, I thought the HDi was bullet-proof, but that's why there is no substitute for experience of others when shopping for a car. It's a pity because that's the one the missus had her heart set on from a looks and "room for a very large dog in the boot" point of view.

So it looks like I will have to do a re-think by the sounds of it. What about the Megane estate with the 1.5 DCi engine circa 2006/2007? Any thoughts positive/negative on this?

Because of mileage that the driver (herself) will be doing, it will have to be a diesel, preferably a small-engine one, 1.6 or below.

Other options are the Focus 1.6TDCi or Opel Astra 1.3 TD, not really gone on either of those though.

That vintage of Megane is again plagued with electrical issues. Focus uses the same 1.6 HDi engine as the 307, Focus 1.8 TDCi would be a bit more robust. Astra 1.3 CDTi is very underpowered, 1.7 CDTi is much better and a very reliable unit.

To be honest you are not talking a huge difference in tax between 1.6 and 1.9 when counting total cost of ownership.

I have literally never heard anyone who said they are very reliable you are the first person. I have one currently I would never touch a 1.6 hdi engine again. My one has only 80k miles on it and there is actually never anything right with it only ever something wrong with it. In an ideal world they probably would be a good engine. But the real world is not ideal they take no abuse what so ever. I can't wait to see the back of my one. The only positive thing I could say is that if you own one you will become handy at car mechanics and learn a lot about that engine from trying to fix it.

Thanks for the reply bazz26, yes I am familiar with the famous Renault electrics. Have you heard anything majorly negative about the 1.5 DCi engine in the Renault?

I've heard of earlier versions having issues but the later ones seem to be reliable enough, Nissan use it in their cars these days too. I'd still avoid that generation of Megane irrespective of how reliable the 1.5dCI engine was.

I still think an Octavia estate 1.9 TDi or Astra 1.7cdti estate are your best options in this class and worth paying a little extra in motor tax for.

+1 on all of this we had two of them meganes 1.5dci the 04 was nothing but trouble the 07 never gave a days trouble and had 100k miles on it. There hit and miss. I'd probably take one over a 1.6hdi but that's best of a bad lot. You really can't go wrong with a 1.9tdi octavia even if you have to drop back the years we have 2 so I'm talking from experience with them currently driving a 05 one 1.9tdi with almost 130k miles and it's like new to drive not a rattle or knock out of it. The 1.7 astra is a great car too I'd have no reservations about buying one. The 1.3 is also very reliable a small bit underpowered but not that bad I liked the one I had just takes some getting used to driving them.
