Unlimited Data - Yeah Right !

How in the name of God do providers get away with saying their data allowance is " unlimited " in this country. Yes I know that they say a fair usage policy applies, but I was browsing on one providers site which advertises " Unlimited " data but when you look at the T&C a fair use policy of 7.5 Gigs applies.

Sure you could honestly use that in a day with some downloading , hd streaming etc.

They are not allowed away with this carry on in the UK . They can set a fair use policy, but they are not allowed to charge you more when you go over it or reduce your speed.

Comreg should do something about this. It winds me up so much.

What provider is offering that? Surely that's a mobile provider?

If it's not, and it's a fibre 70Mbit connection, then downloading at full speed you'd have your monthly data allowance used up about 15-20 minutes.

Mobile is never unlimited. "some downloading , hd streaming etc." - Its not for this. Its for gMusic on the go, Spotify, youtube on the bus for short periods. Checking email and posting picture of your lunch.

I have a 15GB FUP and I've never gone over 6.5GB in a 30 day period. And I would be a rather heavy user.

Unlimited is a con, but so is calling VDSL and DOCSIS fiber. And Vodafone advertise on the radio offering 70MegaBYTE bb, a total lie.

Read the T&Cs, see what you're getting into and never believe anyone in sales, ever.

There is an ad at the moment for meteor, goes along the lines of "unlimited broadband for €10, its really that simple" etc etc, then at the end they tell you its not.

They also have an ad where a fella streams an entire run of a TV programme to his phone while sitting on the beach. I'd love to know where he got a phone with such good battery life :p

What happens when you hit the 7.5GB according to the fair usage policy? Do they then down speed the connection or cut it off completely? If it's down speeding, you might still have unlimited data - just your connection is crippled to a slower speed.

Its on a prepay phone AFAIK so I'd imagine whatever credit you have left would be eaten up pretty quickly?

My brief search couldn't find any previous complaints regarding advertisement of "unlimited" data and fair usage policies. Have a go.

Thanks for that. I actually just filled it in. Normally I would not be bothered but I will see what they say and post here.

I got really excited when I heard that Meteor add then I looked online and saw it has a Fair Usage of 7.5GB which is totally ridiculous....

A little update. I got a letter in the post yesterday from the ASI saying they have acknowledged my complaint and they will let me know the outcome. I was not expecting that.

Will let you know if I hear any more back.

Oh course it is. I had to correct them as I got sick of hearing the agent saying "Megabyte". There's 8 bits in a byte, so they're advertising 560Mb.
