Buying a radio for the kitchen

I'm looking to get a radio for the kitchen. When I do a search I'm been directed towards getting a DAB radio. From the bit of research I have done it seems I shall only be able to receive RTE stations. Is this true? Would I not be able to listen to Today fm with one of these radios?

Yes dab only has the RTE stations but almost all dab sets have the FM band too, so you will still be able to listen to all the regular stations by moving the band switch on the radio set to FM.

Have you a smartphone? In my kitchen/back room i have a Jambox (http://www.currys.ie/Product/JAWBONE-JBE03UK-Jambox-Portbl-Wireless-Speaker-Black/311586/186.1)

I know they're expensive but you can pick up cheaper bluetooth speakers, just conect to a smartphone and listen to TuneIn, you'll get ALL the channels, and can take the speaker anywhere ya go.

I have a smartphone but my toddler daughter likes messing with it so would probably end up switching off the bluetooth or something.

Have you considered a wifi internet radio ? they also have fm radio as well but you can get some great radio stations in very good sound audio from all countries.

I had one of these a few years ago and it was €50 in argus, but I'm not sure where sells them now. Excellent sound from this radio though as I remember. FM/Internet Radio/Dab.

    I'll look into that now

I've got a DAB radio in the kitchen and to be honest it spends most of its time tuned to FM. The selection of stations isn't all that great and the signal can be iffy. That could be down to where I live but there aren't the same issues with FM. If I was to get another radio I'd definitely get a Wi-Fi one. I could be wrong of course but I get the impression that radio stations are more interested in live streaming over the web than getting involved in DAB.

The thing I noticed with wifi internet radio was that there is thousands of stations to choose from. I always liked cafe cody from Majorca spain, nice chilled music. Just tune to any country in the world and the sound is excellent. Well it was from my experience.

The internet radios do have a very good quality sound I have to say. It's great when you get to retune around the world than stuck listening to every Irish radio station talking or giving the news every half hour.

I was just looking at the wifi internet radio prices there, and they have gone up in price big-time

They're certainly not dropping in price, that's for sure. If I saw a reasonably priced Wi-Fi radio I'd certainly be interested in buying it because it's a nuisance having to faff around with the phone and speakers in the kitchen. I'd rather just have a radio and be done with it. I don't know how up to date this list of DAB stations is on Wikipedia but it's certainly not inspiring http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAB_in_Ireland

I agree. DAB is no good at this time, and I heard before that most radio stations do not see the point in changing to dab as they say FM is sufficient enough.

Me i would say your kitchen radio is the one you listen to most...I have a Roberts internet radio and it it is really great...takes a bit of time to get it to it's full potential but it does podcasts and everything.

Your kitchen radio is for the long haul...get a good one...

Wow that was a great price. Cost me a wee bit more. Good for you. Have mine since Oct 2012. I find it superb and the array of stations you can pick up is mind boggling. Happy listening!

Yeah I'm very happy with it. I've only used the FM function so far.
It's easy to use - one button on and off which is great especially for my mother in law who has big problems trying to switch on my TV and I don't blame her, it is confusing. Two remote controls have to be used etc.
