Thoroughbred industry: tracking the horses

..not a very snappy title, but here goes -

A couple of years ago there was an incentive to track down all the thoroughbreds born in the country and to compile some sort of statistics as to how many actually end up in the sports, and where do the ones that never run actually go, not to mention where do all the ex-racers go. There was a striking discrepancy between the numbers of foals born and the numbers of horses actually going in training. The incentive came from the industry itself, not from some animal rights -group.

This has been a very topical subject in the past few years, what with all the talk about the industry in crisis, overproduction, recession-hit sales-figures and the rest. Now, I can't for the life of me remember which institution started this project (ITBA?) It would be interesting to see if anything ever came out of this noble thought.

    Anybody heard anything?
