Losing some teeth

    Hi all,

I am in my 30s now and over the last few years I have starting to loose some teeth at the back of my mouth. I am starting to get worried. I haven't been to the dentist in years and I am afraid to go now. My front teeth aren't too bad and look fine but my teeth at the very back have chipped/broken off. I know it would cost an absolute fortune to get them replaced and my fear is that even if I could afford it my gums have grown over the root of the teeth and that would cause all sorts of complications.

I worried all my teeth will go eventually :(

Why don't you post this in the dentist forum? Dentists post in there and can give you advice.

I went to the dentist for the first time in an embarrassingly long time recently but they've seen it all, OP. I went, he did a diagnosis, gave me a budget and I'm in the middle of getting stuff done (things weren't as bad as I thought they be either). I would recommend you just bite the bullet and face the music though, OP. The longer you leave it, the worse it'll get. It's very cheap in Spain if you fancy going on a dental-themed holiday btw! ;)

I'm the same. I'm 28, hadn't been to the dentist since I was 16. At all. And I don't floss. And I've only just had a baby, and lots of morning sickness, which destroys your teeth. And I've been having a lot of pain with one tooth in particular, at the back of my mouth, and I've been well aware that this tooth has pretty much disintegrated into nothingness.

I was in so much pain after the baby was born that I had no choice but to go to the dentist. She was lovely! That one awful tooth is not salvageable (well, I could get it extracted at €100 or fixed at €2,000 ... it's at the very back ... I'll go for the extraction, thanks!) I had a few other fillings to get, but really, overall, it could be worse. I mean after twelve years of avoiding dentists, it's going to work out at under a grand overall (over as long as I need) to get my teeth perfect. Not bad - I'm basically catching up on what I'd have been paying all along. And it'll be great to know my teeth are OK, and I'm not going to wake up some morning in agony.

Just bite the bullet, go get it done. The peace of mind will be so worth it.

    OP,

there's a saying amongst dentists that states - no matter how bad you think your teeth are, the dentist has seen worse that very day. I hate dentists myself after some bad experiences as a kid, but I've found that dentists nowadays are far more sympathetic towards nervousness in their patients. If they're patient enough to deal with me, they will have no problem with you. One thing I can tell you from personal experience is that it is FAR better to push your fears aside and bite the bullet - I did so a few years ago after a long time of dreading the thought of visiting a dentist, and haven't looked back since.

I'd also advise you to post in the Dental Issues forum - they offer excellent advice, and there are many posts there from members with very similar fears to your own.

    Thanks for the responses.

The point is my issue can't be fixed. I have missing teeth at the very back and some more about to go I think. So its not a case of fixing them, it will be a case of getting false ones put in which will be very costly?

You dont know that. If theres enough tooth left they might be able to build up a crown or something. Im not a dentist and neither are you so the only way to find out is to go and see a dentist!

OP, seeing as you are now requesting advice on a medical procedure (dental), this falls outside the scope of what is permissible in the Personal Issues forum, as we are not qualified to advise you on issues such as this.

As everybody has suggested, please visit your dentist as only he or she will be able to give you the information that you are looking for. Additionally, as mentioned earlier, the Dental Issues forum may also be able to offer you additional advice.

    Sorry, but thread closed.

    Mike
