My son's car failed the NCT yesterday (Saturday) because he was advised that he had no back brakes (only the front ones were working). Two weeks he got a new cylinder fitted to one of the back brakes. The car is a 2002 Yaris 1.0 L. Any advice please to the likely cause(s)?

They should have been more specific? Hand break too loose? Only pulling on one side??

Does the yaris have two independent reservoirs on the brake master cylinder?

I suspect it does and the rear one is empty with a leaky rear slave cylinder or pipe connection.

If your good witha few tools.

Best to park the car up on axle stands, take off the back wheels.

Hubs come off with a tap of a lump hammer.

You'll know at a glance if they are leaking any brake fluid.

Rear brake shoes probably just need a adjusting (youtube would be good for tips on this).

Also Yaris are know for "stretching hand brake cables".

    Hope that helps.
