Driving this morning and the clutch started to screech every time I changed gears. It's an 07 grand Picasso. Any thoughts to what's the problem and how expensive it will be

sounds like the clutch release bearing has failed so a replacement clutch kit would be needed

I have a similar problem with my 04 golf 1.4 petrol. Just started all of a sudden a week ago. Every time I press in the clutch it is noisy. Had it looked at and was told it's the release bearing. In my case it's a new clutch. Hopefully sorted this week. Annoying, but first mechanical problem I've had after 150k miles with the car.

What engine is in it. If it gets bad you will no longer be able to change gear. If it breaks up totally bits could get into starter etc.

Would be around 380 to 450 of the top of my head. Can't check excat prices at the moment.

Thanks for that. Not great but manageable

You're sure it's not a slipping fan belt? This can screech when you engage the drive after changing gears, pulling away etc. As a result, many people would assume that the noise is from the clutch.

    Release bearing

Change it before it explodes and you can't disengage the clutch or thrash your flywheel

Just got a quote from the garage. €1400. He says that the mass fly wheel, pressure plate and the release bearing must be replaced. Is this reasonable? Feeling sick.

Not unlikely at that age. Think of all the horrible CO2 emissions you have prevented though. Driving a diesel over a petrol has surely saved you that much and more in fuel costs?

Not a mechanic but from experience with a Ford Mondeo, this clutch issue can really affect other aspects of the car such as the starter motor. The dust etc can block up the starter motor - have seen this personally. Got starter motor cleaned thinking this was just through wear and tear, dust etc, but within a few weeks same issues again (car not starting all the time). Was the Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch wearing, causing the starter motor to clog with metal grit, dust etc. Can you pinpoint the screeching noise, its likely its the clutch, but is it possible its the fan belt / power steering belt?

Here is a rough guide to part costs:

    Release Bearing:

Flywheel Pulse Sensor (Not sure if they are required)

See what the breakdown is re labour and parts /flywheel cost etc. Make your own decision then whether you will be happy to leave flywheel unchanged or not. The full labour cost will need to be paid again should the flywheel fail down the line whereas it wont cost you any labour to replace it now.

Did you go to a main dealer? If yes, this sounds perfectly normal.
Please let us know where you are, so we can recommend some good indies for a real quote.
I got a similar quote to do clutch on my CMax from main dealer, in the end independent garage did it for less than the price of parts than main dealer.
And they where not shabby parts, genuine Sachs.

Got my Golf sorted at an indy this week. Release bearing problem, so new clutch fitted. Clutch kit €160 , labour €180. Different car now, nice smooth gear changes.

most people have foot on clutch and car in gear at traffic lights reducing its life, use handbrake and take foot off clutch, parts used are plastic crap and no life, pressing foot on and off clutch pedal you will hear and feel through pedal how bad.

In my case it would be simply wear and tear @ 150k miles, as I'm rarely in stop/start traffic. But good advice, hopefully it may increase the life of some clutches.

I can always tell those people, they're the ones who take 15 seconds to move off the lights.
I have it out of gear, foot on brake, an eye on the opposite lights and pedestrian lights.
Once that light goes green I'm off, before the guy behind me even realises the lights had changed.
If I know the light is about to go green and won't stay green long (but red for a fcuking eternity), I leave it in gear.
Last clutch lasted 250k km, methinks that is none too shabby.
