    We have a semi-detached house with a back garden.
    We need to do two alterations:

    (1)
    We are planning to alter the back wall (facing the garden) by turning the existing big window into a door (same size).
    We are also looking to turn existing small door in the same back wall into a new window.

    (2)
    We are also looking to put a attic velux window (not altering the roof line) in the roof facing the back garden.

    I have checked google and boards and looks like (2) is no issue. I have no idea if altering the back wall (1) is exempt or not. Can someone confirm?
    :confused:

    There is no specific exemption for either, but, generally both would be considered exempt under Section 4(1)h of the planning act....that is assuming the house is not a protected structure.

    If in doubt, or if you require official confirmation, apply for a Section 5 Declaration.

    Hi BryanF. No, this is to get more light in the attic. It will not be used as a bedroom/room.

    Section mentioned below.
    It will kind of affect the external appearance as the door will be bigger and in a different place on the wall facing the garden. :confused:

    (h) development consisting of the carrying out of works for the maintenance, improvement or other alteration of any structure, being works which affect only the interior of the structure or which do not materially affect the external appearance of the structure so as to render the appearance inconsistent with the character of the structure or of neighbouring structures;

    But...will it 'render the appearance inconsistent with the character of the structure or of neighbouring structures'?

    Probably/most likely not?

    If you are that worried about it, engage a professional to advise.

    As I stated above, there are no hard and fast exemptions for what you propose, but, generally what you propose would, under normal circumstances, be considered exempt (Note: This does not apply to a protected structure).

    Thanks guys, also got through to the planning department of the city council and they confirmed. No planning required if it a back wall.:)
