It's not unusual for a Dublin Bus ticket reader to take up to 5 seconds to read the card, but if retailers are also having trouble scanning it, then I think it might be a faulty card. If it were me, I'd contact Leap card support. customer.care@leapcard.ie or 1850 824 824

Another point worth making is that the Leapcard really should be presented directly to the reader.

Slap it down and hold it Flat up against the Reader Surface, but DO NOT scan it..ie: wave it or tap it constantly.

Either of these actions will greatly increase the chances of a misread.

Many people refer to Chipped Cards as "Swipe Cards",which is exactly what they are not ! :(

Sadly this is still quite true.

AFAIAA,the target time-to-live for Leapcard recognition is 500 Milliseconds (ms) or HALF a second.

This target is being missed by a Country Mile and then some, and remains the greatest visible and experiential issue for Leapcard users....put bluntly,It stinks and underlines why the NTA/Dublin Bus need to follow the London lead and abolish ALL on-board cash transactions asap.

It is apparent that the Wayfarer TGX 150 cannot meet the 500ms target when switching between Cash and Leap operations...The Central Processor appears to have insufficient cycling capacity to continually perform the switchover.

Comparing it with London's Oystercard is all well and good, but it ignores the Flat-Fare on London Buses...whereas the Dublin Bus machine has 18 different cash/Leap fares.

Quick and Easy Fix....Flat Cash Fare of €3.00.
Cheaper Stage-Based Fares available ONLY via Leapcard....END OF :)

It could be implemented Overnight ;)

The only hope may exist by grasping the coat-tails of the Swiftway Bus Rapid Transit proposal which "features" Remote,Off-Bus Ticket Purchase as standard.....should we hold our breath I wonder .????

Yes that's certainly true. I saw someone in front of me doing this not too long ago and got 3 failed reads in a row. I told her to hold it against the reader and it read fine after that.

Yea for sure....If it had been me...I would have called the ITS product,Bullseye and had the readers use a Bullseye Symbol, which could have been marketable as regards ease-of-use...:P

This constant faffing-about which Leapcard users have to endure is having an effect on the Cards perception amongst those who HAVEN'T tried it yet......and this substantial group represent the greatest challenge for the NTA if the ITS project is to succeed
