I want to get insured on my friend's car for the weekend, never done it before so just wondering if it's a straightforward process that can be done online or is it overly-complicated?

Can I do it under my policy or will it have to be under hers? Any idea what I should expect to pay?

I'm with Liberty if that's of any significance..not sure who she's with.

I'm not sure about liberty, however my friend covered me previously on his convertible for a long weekend and I think the charge was a standard administration fee of 40 euro.

We were both with 123.ie though.
He simply called them up, gave them the details and it was done.

It doesn't hurt to call them up and ask the question.

    Hope this helps.

Assuming you want better cover than the third party cover you probably have to drive other cars under your own policy, the easiest thing to do is to get your friend to add you as a named driver. Shouldnt be too difficult and shouldnt cost too much (unless there is a particular reason why an insurer might not want to cover you on the car in question).

I just looked at my own policy and it states:

"The policyholder if they have a full EU licence, may also drive, with the permission of the owner, any private motor car that they do not own."

Am I right in thinking I'm already covered to drive her car?

Is that clause included in your cert? The policy may state the text that you've quoted but you'll find that it's heavily qualified - you need to read your cert rather than the policy document and see if the provision which is generally known as 'driving other cars' is included.

It's on your cert. under the heading 'vehicles or classes of vehicles covered.' If it only mentions your car by registration number then your policy will not cover you to drive another vehicle.

Yes the section I quoted is on the cert under that heading - so I take it I'm not covered to drive my friends car?

Is it just me or is that part a bit confusing?

If that text appears on your cert. then you are covered (third party only) to drive your friend's car.

The certificate only ever refers to the 3rd Party aspect of your cover. The policy document outlines the overall cover. In your circumstances, I'd ring your insurer to swap cover for the weekend. Remember, this will mean your own car cannot be driven

This won't work because he/she isn't the registered owner of the car ;)

Your best bet is to call your insurer and asks if the policy covers other people's cars - if not - then you will need to be added as a named driver on your friend's policy.

It will work. Insurers permit temporary transfers to vehicles not owned by you

because a temporary substitution removes cover from your own vehicle!!
