Leaving Templemore midway through the course

    Hey guys,

I'm in the competition this year for the Gardaí, but I'm also going to be applying for a Cadetship in the Air-Corp. But since the competition for the air corp will be substantially harder, I might not get it this year.

But, if i was to get into the Gardaí, what would the implications be if say I got accepted into the Air-Corp next year, half way through my Gardaí training and I left?
Do I need to buy my way out of the Gardaí? If I did leave for the Cadetship, and fail for what ever reason, would that result in me being ousted from future Gardaí competitions?

    Regards,
    Xios

If it were a thing that you find yourself waiting on a panel or to be called for the next stage of recruitment with AGS and get into the PDF in the meantime then you will no longer be allowed to join AGS unless you leave the PDF.
All applicants must have relinquished all previous employment prior to entry to the Garda College and may not be on a career break from any such employment upon entry.

Actually, Would i get denied leave to take the tests for the Air Corp while training in the Gardaí? Or would they have to allow me to sit those tests?

Annual leave is usually restricted while on phase 1 to two weeks at the end of completion of phase 1. You are not allowed pick and choose leave while in templemore. That's the way it was when I was a student but the program has changed now. Saying that, it's not practical for them to grant leave during phase 1 so I doubt very much that has changed. Unfortunately you most likely won't be able to avail of leave while in the college.

Northside girl: just out of curiosity would you recommend a career AGS with all the changes that have occurred in the last few year, I know it's a very un-rewarding job and always has been but does the satisfaction of the job still keep you motivated?

Good luck with whatever you chose. I would go for the Air Cadet myself.

Its all relative I suppose - new entrants will only know the current circumstances so what you never had you never miss etc. My opinion (as a retired sergeant) is that the job satisfaction will outweigh the current reduced job benefits. Perhaps conditions will improve again over time. If I was 20 again I would still be an eager applicant - so id say go for it.

I mean this in the sincerest of ways and im not trying to be a smart alec or trouble maker, but please dont take up space unless your 100% genuinely dedicated in wanting to join AGS. The competition is hard enough but when theres people there that are only in it as an alternative to what they want to do its worse! The same as leaving after youve secured a place in the college is a terrible kick in the teeth.

To be honest, I'm not gonna give up an opportunity just because I think its 'unfair' on the others. If you want into the Gardaí, work harder than people like me.

To give an update, I didn't get the Cadetship, so i'm a sad panda.
