Since a burglar helped himself to my Baume & Mercier a few months ago I've been casting around for a suitable replacement. My first thought was to just get the same Classima Executive again, but that would require a lot less time looking at and reading about watches so where's the fun in that!

I rather like the look of the NOMOS Glashuette Tangomat models http://www.nomos-glashuette.com/en/watches/tangomat/tangomat/

but then I came across the Muehle Glashuette range and quite like the http://www.jurawatches.co.uk/collections/muehle-glashuette-watches/products/muehle-glashuette-antaria-chronograph-m1-39-57-lb-watch-mgl-099

I realised then that Glashuette was a place and there are quite a few watchmakers attaching this label to their brand, the original Glashutte's are real top end pieces and out of my price range.

Anybody familiar with the other Glashuette variants, the Nomos and Muehle brands , what are they like and are they worth the money?

Better council will likely come along to help, but over the years I've noted the Muhle Glashutte company getting the thumbs up from serious watch collectors/nutters. Good value and really good quality watches and they're unusual and with a different style going on. Rare too. Not the usual Tag Hoower fare at all. I love their SAR chronos

The Glashutte label is similar to the Geneve label on watches. It means that by law 50% of the watch must be made in the town, a town with a very deep history in watchmaking. Glashutte would be the German version of the Swiss Geneve. TBH like you I only found that out a few years ago, I had thought it was a specific maker.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Can I just throw in a word of caution, which relates generally to looking at watches online. The Antaria chronograph you linked to is 42mm in diameter, 14.2mm thick and will probably wear big for that size because of the slim bezel and dial layout. The Nomos on the other hand is 38.3mm in diameter and just 8.2mm thick (pretty impressive for an auto), again the thin bezel will make it seem bigger than that size, but there is a huge difference in the thickness of the watches. I think you need to have an idea of what size watch you want, rather than purely how a photo of it looks, because it makes a big difference as to how it sits on your wrist and whether your shirt fits over it.

Fear not Zagato, I wouldn't buy a watch like this without trying it on, purely pleasurable research at the moment. Probably the only time I willingly go shopping :-)
