Proposed London grand prix

So, unlike the Olympic Stadium proposal, this one would be in the very centre. I remember playing Project Gotham Racing on Xbox and thinking as I raced through Trafalgar Square that a circut like that could never exist in reality!

Bernie Ecclestone has said the idea is "no joke", which ought to raise the eyebrows of any F1 fan.

I suspect it won't happen. In the same way that Manhattan, Rome, Paris, etc, didn't happen.

It would, ofc, be amazing publicity for the sport. But, street-circuits rarely provide exciting races.

In the unlikely event that a race does happen, it's probably unlikely that it would become a staple of the calendar, i.e. it would just be run for a few years.

    What do you reckon?

BBC F1 done a piece on it last year i think where they had Button and i think Hamilton in a simulator going through the circuit and giving their opinions, found it.

From an F1 fan's perspective, with Bangkok happening in 2015, unless they were to get rid of either Singapore or Monaco then i wouldnt want another street circuit on the calendar, and i cant see either of those being dropped.

In saying that though I was in Singapore a few years ago when the GP was on (flew home the sat ) and the build up and excitement in the city was amazing even just for the testing, so id probably try and get over to sample it.

The idea of a London grand prix has been thrown around for a few years now. It just seems like folly to me like all these other city races that have been proposed in more recent years. I'd rather see the European grand prix revived and hosted at Donington.

I'm just wondering how they'll deal with Admiralty Arch.

It would make for some amazing shots to see F1 cars flying up to Big Ben or whizzing past Buckingham Palace though.

The idea seems to surface about every 5 years. Now if the Birmingham Superprix was to be revived...

But seriously, it seems to be a story floated to get PR for the consultation on road closures, which is a good thing. At present, you need an act of Parliament to close a road in the UK any kind of event, rather than just applying to the local County Council here. Hence the complete lack of tarmac rallying in the UK on public roads. It would also allow for more events in the North, as they currently have a quota for road closures that's split between various events.
