Ok, I'm new to my school this year. I teach home ec

Before midterm we were talking about Orals, practicals and Easter etc. as we spoke about Easter the topic of Pancake Tuesday came up. Some staff were saying how they are looking forward to their pancakes on Pancake Tuesday. I took no notice till a colleague pulled me aside afterwards and said when the teacher I replaced started she got roped into making pancakes for the kids and staff at break time. She was giving me heads up it's expected I'll carry on.

I laughed and said no way. I'm there to teach not cook bloody pancakes for the staff. Don't get me wrong, I've brought in the odd cake etc if I'm cooking at home or demonstrating to the kids but I'm feeling like a skivvy this week with the attitude off some people. since we've come back this week, I've actually started to dread the staff room as they're constantly harping on about it. Even the principal and dp.

I laughingly said I'll put up posters with recipes but am feeling under increasing pressure. This is the same staff and management that are very unsupportive towards the dept in general. Don't want to give particulars but it's a constant battle to get basic equipment, ingredients, cleaning agents.

The staff are actually really nice but I feel management looks down on home ec and consequently we're seen as a deadbeat dept for the weaker kids.

I've piles of extra curricular stuff planned for March as it is so it's not that I'm shy of work outside of the classroom but on my terms, if you know what I mean

There is no way I'm willing to play skivvy next Tuesday and spend my whole day cooking flipping pancakes.

I need a few good one liners for Monday and Tuesday in particular when I know I'll get comments! It either that or take my breaks in my classroom for the day!

Get cracking (pun intended ) and post your one liners to put them back in their boots on the day

You could always say you will make them no problem and your requests in return are as follows :

The woodwork department making you a piece of furniture.
The art teacher painting a picture for your home.
The business department sorting your tax returns.
The maths teacher balancing your household budget.
The music department making you a cd of all your favourite songs.
The PE department making you a new fitness regime.
The history department researching your family history.
The English department writing you a nice poem.
Management give you an extra period off in next year's timetable to facilitate your extra curricular feeding of the staff!

    I'll batter something/someone alright today.

I'd go with "**** off for yourself with your ****ing pancakes", but failing that, point out that you're the home ec teacher, your job is to supervise while others cook, so if they want to organise themselves into groups of 3, you'll judge their efforts and give a gold star to the team who does best.

im a home ec teacher, my advice, start the way you mean to go on! No way would I do it! you would be mad to cook them pan cakes. it demeans your position and subject if you buckle under their pressure. I think it is very cheeky, I am sure they are dropping plenty of hints/ jokes about it.... cop on and stand your ground!

HE teachers can get a raw deal if they get into the habit of baking for the staff regularly. Most of it is most likely only slagging or chancing their arm.

How about getting the students to make them and sell them in the staff room? Money going to a charity or part of the a fundraiser or mini company. Staff get pancakes and the message that this is something unusual and to not expect something for nothing, you get kudos for your initiative.

Just say there's a shortage of ingredients in the HE department and also the pans dirty because your out of fairy liquid ;)

    OK simple...
    Tell them to tuck in...
    And smile....
because all their pancakes have been spiked with laxatives...

God they are so insulting! The absolute cheek of them. I have no complaints in my school however if any non practical teacher annoys us (me and other HE teacher) with degoratory like comments like that we tell them "it would be great to be in charge of a book and a pen". I will never forget the principal one time was trying to cut our contact with 5th years, of course we told him about journals and time consuming dishes eg soufflé etc and he came our with "could you not just use Jamie's 30 minute meals!". Listen if you don't lol you would get annoyed!!! I never drop anything into the staff room! If there are any spares (if there are loads of ingredients and an extra gets made), or if I dem something I will either keep it for me or a neighbour, offer it to one of my friends to take home or give it to one of my classes (more than likely 6th years) as a treat while they do exam qs.

Yeah I am standing my ground and will NOT be cooking them -apart from in class with the kids-
My post is centered around getting one liners to put them in their place as I'm actually getting stressed in the staff room over the blooming thing :-(

I have tried laughing it off and have given a blunt "ah NO" but I'm just getting some people harping on about it. It's getting uncomfortable.

No cos the staff were very unsupportive when I did a big fundraiser earlier in the year to replace our 20odd yr old washing machine that was a health and safety hazard as it was leaking so much. In spite of the machine being used by at least 5 different departments, the staff were crap at supporting it and I heard back one of the dept that uses it was actually whinging about having a fundraiser to buy the machine.
2 classes are making pancakes as their normal cookery class but it's for themselves to eat.
Have loads of stuff planned for the month of march involving extra curricular and cross curricular initiatives so don't need this one!

gaeilgebeo's responses are best, adjust to the teacher you are talking to. 'I'll make you pancakes after you've... etc'. Smile broadly suggesting such a thing is absurd. If it's the geography teacher ask them to plan out a detailed holiday plan with suggested things to do in each location.

Tell them the last person who ate your pancakes ended up living in their bathroom for a week.

I am so mean I don't even let the kids make pancakes! Happywithlife that is terrible, do you not have a budget? We get an amount every year and spend it how we want! 2 years ago it was all spent and the tumble dryer and a cooker went and I told principal and he let me buy new ones! We don't let other depts use our washing machines! I remember one teacher left their swimming gear in the machine when I started, the cheek of them, as if to say wash it for me! I pleaded ignornace put it in a plastic bag and sent it to lost property!!!! Lol lol some people think all we do is make a few buns!!!

On behalf of the maths teachers, this is not what maths teachers do. This one is for the business teachers again I think. We'll prove stuff for you though.

gaeilgebeo is right though. I think you have two options: go to the principal and tell him that you feel that the joke has gone too far and it's making you uncomfortable or just laugh when they say it and if someone tries to push the issue your one-liner is "You were serious?" in a tone that makes it very clear that the very idea is idiotic.

Our home ec teacher regularly leaves food in the staff room after she's cooked it as a demonstration for the students but she is certainly not expected to do it and would tell us where to go in no uncertain terms if anyone even suggested that it was expected of her.

    thanks
problem is the principal is as bad and I'm that unenviable position of being a non-cid holder so can't afford to rock the boat too much. am doing my best to laugh it off in a you can't be serious kinda way
posted here to get more one liners which I have done to stock pile for Tuesday :D

just back again to tell you again - stand your ground! DO NOT BE BULLIED INTO THIS!. Next you will be expected to bake/cater for grad masses, open night etc. That is not part of your contract. if you give in you are opening the flood gates. please do not be stressed just stand strong and keep laughing it off and change the topic each time it is brought up. If you cant face the colleagues on Tues stay away from them , go out for lunch , avoid confrontation- ideally carry your head high and face them but I know it will be difficult. Look it at like this- you are not CID yet - OK- but this will not make or break your potential of getting your CID.
Cop on and stand up for your profession - we are not a general dogs body subject who can be cornered into mass catering on the whim of some colleagues! Stop worrying, they will get over it and move on , do not give in ! Enjoy your Sat!

Just say your not making them....I cant understand the reason why you don't...you are not the previous Home Ec. teacher, you are not a hired caterer, so if you don't want to make pancakes, just don't make them !!!
one liner = NO, I AM NOT MAKING PANCAKES.

When I was a tea boy I made horrible tea, it didn't take long for them to get another tea boy. If you put something in the pancakes that gives them the runs, you will only have to make them once.

That could backfire(excuse the pun). You'll have a lot more substitution to do when your colleagues are out on the throne!

Stuck to sticking up my usual posters with recipes, serving suggestions and top ten tips 😃😃😃
Thanks for all the great one liners 😜
Did loads with the kids and then again at home! Hope ye all enjoyed yours!

Btw gjc bit late now but standard basic recipe is 1of everything. 100g plain flour 1 egg 1/4 litre (250ml) milk. Whisk well and leave to settle for at least 30 mins.

    Fair play to ya...

Actually I was thinking that as lent will be starting tomorrow you could serve them up cold black tea (no sugar) and toast (no butter) to make up for the pancakes.
