What random questions enter boardsies heads from time to time?
Just been wondering there how much water would be needed to put out the sun? This isn't particularly important, but interesting to me none the less.
There obviously wouldn't be enough water on earth to extinguish it right now. But surely someone out there has the figure.

There's so many others I can think of too, like how big the internet is!?

What sort of questions have boardsies thought of from time to time?

Just been wondering there how much water would be needed to put out the sun?

You can't put out the Sun with water:

Even if you had magically cold water which suddenly cooled the Sun to a temperature of absolute zero, it'd just start up again, as the pressure of gravity at the core is enough to fuse Hydrogen to Helium.

And water is H2O, so you'd actually be adding fuel to the fire...

    Hmmm..
Surely if you dropped the sun into a big enough pool of water it would be possible to put it out. no?

Back in the Stone Age they used AAA batteries with a step-up adaptor, utterly primitive.

No. If the "pool of water" was more than half the size of the Sun, it would ignite into a new star itself under its own gravity.

You sir just blew my mind. Why dont we build our own little star and sail off with it like to other galaxies. It would be smaller but closer. We could then put out the big sun and float off into space.

Why doesn't water ignite then if it's made of Hydrogen and Oxygen?

It's already burnt. Hydrogen burns by binding to Oxygen, so water is like Hydrogen ash.

What goes on in the Sun isn't ordinary chemical fire, like Hydrogen binding to Oxygen, it's a nuclear reaction, a gigantic continuous H-bomb.

i call bs, h20 does not/can not fuel fire
    wrote:

The reaction is called combustion, which is a type of oxidation.
Oxidation occurs when one atom has a much stronger attraction for electrons than another atom. An oxygen atom has a much stronger attraction for electrons than a hydrogen atom. When one O2 molecule collides with 2 H2 molecules, each oxygen atom attracts 2 electrons from the 2 hydrogen atoms in one H2 molecule. The oxygen atom with 2 electrons is an oxide ion with -2 charge. Each hydrogen atom has 1 proton and 1 electron. After the oxygen atom has removed the electron, the charge of the H is +1. The 2 H+1’s form a covalent bond with the O-2, and H2O, water is produced and heat energy is released.

    2 H+1 + O-2 → H2O + heat energy
    2 H2 + O2 → 2 H2O + 2 times as much energy

H2O is much more stable than H2 or O2 gas. When water is poured on a fire it cannot reverse the reaction above and form H2 + O2, unless more energy is provided than was released. 120 volt electricity can cause water to break apart and produce H2 + O2.

The reason why I explained the process above was to eliminate the decomposition of water as a possible reaction when water is poured on a fire!

So, what does happen to the water when it is poured on a fire?

The temperature of a candle flame is approximately 1000°C = 2400°F

Water has a much higher heat capacity than air or fuels like candle wax or wood. As room temperature, 20°C = 68°F, water is poured on 1000°C = 2400°F candle flame, the temperature of hot gases in the flame decrease. If the decreases below the ignition temperature of paraffin, candle wax, the fire is extinguished!

    Water boils at 100°C = 212°F.

When water is poured on a fire, the heat energy from the fire increases the temperature of the liquid water to 100°C = 212°F, and the water boils. The water absorbs the heat energy produced by the fire faster than the combustion reaction can produce heat energy. The result is a decrease of the temperature of the fuel and air surrounding the fuel. Now the temperature of the fuel and oxygen is lower than the ignition temperature of the fuel. So the combustion reaction ceases.

If a burning log is thrown into a lake, the oxygen supply has been removed. No oxygen → NO oxidation → Fire is extinguished.

A fire needs fuel and oxygen, and a high enough temperature to ignite the fuel.

#1. Water is stable, so water will decompose when poured on a fire.

#2. Water cools the fuel and air below the ignition temperature

#3. Water acts an incombustible blanket, which provides an impenetrable barrier between oxygen and the fuel.

For these 3 reasons, water extinguishes a fire!!

I hope this helps you understand how a fire is extinguished!
