Mk4 Golf 1.4 - what's it worth?

A colleague and I were discussing this today as, up until recently, we both drove near-identical Mk4 Golf's. Today we realised that there was a considerable difference in the prices we sold them for. I just want to get a few opinions from people here.

    Both cars were
    - 2002 "comfortline" models
    - ~100k miles
    - NCT'd for 6+ months
    - serviced (timing belt done on both)
    - overall good condition

What do you think a Mk4 Golf fitting the description is worth today?

Not more than €2,200 anyway, maybe €1,900?

I've seen plenty on DD for that, not worth it, but that's what they're going esp with a decent NCT

That's what they're asking for, not what they're going for.
That's why there are so many there, they're the ones not selling.

Considering I got 2.5k for mine in November 2011 as a trade in, 2001 with 63k miles, comfortline with GTI alloys and timing belt done at 54k miles.

I would imagine nowadays you'd be looking at 1400 for one, if you do well and privately.

These cars tend to have a following with 18 to 24 year old lads, if that car is in good condition then it would fetch around €2k easily imo.

1.4s are the worst golf anyone could buy. I love my VW's but wouldnt touch one with a barge pole. GTIs go for not much more, Insurance is cheap enough and will always do mid 30's MPG, only 200 more to tax aswell. Why would anyone want a unreliable 1.4? The 1.8t is a great engine. Im on my third 1.8t'd powered car and never have I had an issue.

Is the 1.4 unreliable? What problems would it suffer from?
Thought VAG engines would be reliable no?

You can see a lot of Golfs, Boras and Polos for sale that have failed on emissions. Happens to a lot of older 1.4 VW's.

The 1.4 will burn oil like no tomorrow they are fairly bad, If one doesnt then its in the minority. Most VAG engines are reliable but there is ones to be avoided like any other manufacturer.

Polo is a different engine and not bad at all.

What about the 1.0 engines in the 6N's?

Had one of them in my ibiza and the sister had one in her polo both first cars so power didnt matter. They are very unpowered but reliable. I was 17 and it got the nuts driven off it daily. Only problem was the clutch cable went and I ended up driving out of a disco carpark getting it going on the starter and drive home with no clutch. Very embarrassing for the 17yo me!
