Is This Internet Speed Acceptable?

Hi, I've recently noticed that our Wi-Fi speed has been insanely slow. We're paying for 7MB Internet with Sky, and after about 6 o clock, we only get between 10 and 20 kb/s. After building a PC and having to install drivers and games, this is just too slow. The password is secure so it's not a problem of stealing. Is this normal or should we be getting something faster?

It sounds like network congestion, welcome to the party. BTW, If your gaming then use ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.

You should be getting more than that. For a 8Mb download connection, that's just ridiculous.

Have you tried changing your WiFi password and restarting the router? Do you notice any difference in speed when you connect it directly into the main telephone socket (plugging out filter and phone and just inserting the cable to the router)?

Can you perform a WiFi scan of your channels?
Sometimes called a site survey on routers.

There's only about 14 Wi-Fi channels available for everyone.
If you're running on channel 6, and 2 neighbours are also running on channel 6, then it causes a lot of interference on your WiFi network.

If you've an Android Smart phone, then there's a very nice (free) app called "WiFi Analyzer" which has an excellent visual representation of your local WiFi signal environment.

Try connecting the machine via Ethernet cable to the router and see if the speeds improve. Those speeds are pathetic though, so I would definitely suspect an issue with either the ISP or internal wiring. I'll move this to the broadband forum where it is better suited
