What should I do? Leave voluntarily or?

    Hi All

OK, my situation in a nutshell.

Moved here from UK in october 2012, to be closer to my Mum (who is Irish) in her twilight years. Have worked full time all my life since 17. Finally found a job last spring.

The thing is - I work at "anonymous" in the county, serving hot food. We have to fill in temperature check sheets on an hourly basis. When I started, the other counter lady told me I HAD to lie on these sheets as the bosses dont want food to be thrown away. On asking, the bosses seem to be unaware of these fibs, but will give me a hard time if I do the job as is legally required. Desperate for a bit of work, I have continued with this over the winter, despite being very unhappy about lying, but the peer pressure in the job makes you carry on, if you know what I mean - too scared to speak up and bosses are scary.

So we had an EH visit, cut a long story short we skived through it. I now realise that if any problems with food temps, it's ME personally that's liable for any comeback.

I really cant carry on in this job fibbing and worrying about being caught. I'm stressed out about it and the repurcussions for anyone eating from there.

    My questions are:

Is this a 'good enough' reason to leave voluntarily? Will I be disqalled for 9-12 weeks, or even permanently for leaving of my own choice???

Will there be any comeback when the social check my reason for leaving? i.e. I'm scared if I whistleblow on this place there will be comeback - they know where I live...

Can I ask the social to be confidential on this?

Just looking for some experienced feedback and advice - thanks all.

Confront your bosses, tell them as you are legally liable, you will no longer falsify these records.

Worst case scenario, they fire you and you claim benefits.
Best case scenario, they respect your decision and mend their ways

If they play hardball, you play hardball. Get some evidence first - record a failing temp, write it on a sheet. Then wait until a boss gives you grief about it and record the conversation. If they threaten to fire you play the conversation and say if they do you will go to the authorities with it.

AFAIK it's illegal to use recorded evidence of someone without their consent, but they probably won't know that.

A compromise could be that you don't take these temps anymore, then it's someone else's head on the block if things go wrong.

Thanks guys - problem is I'm scared to confront them, would rather leave quietly and then start the noise. This time of year is when jobs seem to come up, so I'd hope I'll be back in employment pretty soon - ps Im not wanting to avoid work, as it gets me out of the house for a bit of company at least!!!

I tried doing the job as legally required late last year - got so much grief - my colleagues also ganged up on me as they are doing it to hang onto their jobs, ot keep the bosses happy - i.e. I'm not sure the bosses know the girls are doing this and I dont want to get them into grief by blowing their game....

I'm no good at recording/manipulating/etc to prove a point - just want to get out asap with my reputation intact - I worked in a Michelin star restaurant in the UK and some of the food handling practices where I am are incredible! This is a well known place too.

I have enough savings put by to last out three months or so disqualification, but I was chatting with my neighbour, and she seems to think you get permanently disqualified from benefit if you leave of your own choice.

There is also a chance that we could start our own place up in the summer, with my cousins who are on the system, and are getting help from the social to do so, just wondering if I'll get help in the meantime.
