Someone ran in to my parked car

And scratched up the bumper pretty bad.

The car was parked in a gated car park with key code access given to the companies that share the office space.

So someone I work with did this and drove off. I'm absolutely livid. I'm out every 30 minutes now looking for a car with matching damage.

Can I do anything at all?

cctv on the building is your best bet. Have a chat with security.

Edit: every one says the same thing at the same time!!

If a colleague did that to me I would install my own CCTV? or a dash cam until I caught him.
Have you asked in the office? Put up a note.

Checking with the management company if the spot is covered by CCTV.
As far as I know only the entrance is covered and I know it happened some time before lunch so that's no good.

As far a I can make out there is no paint left from the other car on my car. Might have been an unpainted bumper. The mark is about 12cm high.

That should be good. You have an idea of the time so check all the vehicles that are shown in motion at the critical time.
Of course if they pull the old data protection act you will have to go through a longer procedure

The CCTV covering the entrance is not working.
The CCTV covering the parking lot was owned by another company who moved out so that has been disconnected.

So there is no CCTV at all. Nice one >:-(

    Can't Catch The Villain?

Anyway, aside from the unexpected thread hilarity, sorry to hear about damage. Sounds like a limited number of suspects so looking for corresponding damage on another car is yourr only option. Even at that, dunno what you can do if they deny it completely. Depending onn workplace politics you may have to leave it go

You could post a bluff on your notice board with something along the lines of:

"Car recently damaged by a colleague, cctv has captured the incident and car reg. As you are a colleague, I would like to fix without going through your insurance. You can contact me on xxx-xxxxxxx before Friday."

Kick up a stink in work and see if there's anything on the CCTV system of it happening. If there is go to the Gardai. Edit : Just saw thats no longer an option

Short of that however if you are insured comprehensively then you can claim via your own policy whilst paying an excess for the damage sustained. You will have a claim against you and probably lose your NCB.

How can you install CCTV or a dashcam after the fact and catch someone?

Well you would need a closed circuit.
    And a television.

    And a DeLorean.

I don't think this would be the best idea.

If you know who it is, then you'd be expected to contact that person direct without getting the whole office gabbing about the incident.

If the people you work with are half decent then I'd expect the person responsible to own up at some stage - how long has it been since you noticed OP?

We have been out measuring the angles and been looking at how this could have happened and we are pretty certain we have figured out exactly where the other car was parked. So I'm going to shoot out an email asking people who was parked in that spot. I'll catch the fecker.

A colleague noticed the damage as he was going out for lunch yesterday. I didn't notice until home time.

Fix it and move on . How do you know it wasnt someone doing deliveries or servicing equipment in the building, I used to park in carparks like these a lot carrying out services in buildings. The majority of your workmates who have to be innocent will soon get fed up of been under your suspicion and the ensuing witchhunt.

That level of mediocrity is hardly becoming of reaching for the stars now is it?

How many cars does the car park hold? If a small number it should be easy to investigate other regular cars for damage, but even if you find the car you will have no way of legally proving they did the damage to you! The best you can hope for is to find another car with damage and be satisfied that you have the culprit but at the end of the day you cannot prove anything so you will need to pay up yourself

I think that is pretty poor advise. It's probably what went through the head of the person who did it.

Access is pretty restricted so this wasn't some blow in. The witch hunt shall carry on until I catch the fecker. At this point I would not accept cash, I want this to go through insurance and I'm really hoping I can get a prosecution out of it too.

    I want to draw blood!

If you read the posts you will see that the op was visiting the carpark every 30 mins. It would alleviate that. Also at the time the belief was that CCTV footage was available so the culprit would be copped returning.
Having said all of that the criminal always visits the scene of the crime....and if there is a space beside you and a car comes in, ignores it and parks as far away from you as possible, thats your man....or wonan:cool:

Ha ha no chance .Reach for the stars would have owned up. I think it will be a futile effort to find the culprit though.

Might not be that futile. This has really angered quite a lot of people here. There is an expectation here that one should own up to something like this.

SNR is an important measure of video quality in CCTV systems and typically measured in dB.

DB is a common abbreviation for database.
Maybe there is a database of the CCTV that could be accessed?
