Anybody listening to Colm's first drive show now ? I think he is doing a solid job but the show doesn't seem to have any more substance than Will Leahy's show.

A bit shaky so far and 3 seconds of trains drive by every few minutes and how many times does one give out the text number.

    No.

Would rather pour acid into my eyes than listen to him on the drive. There'll probably be plenty of car accidents with him boring people into falling asleep while driving.

    Andy Mac/Dave Mac/Steve K/Ben Murray/Dermot & Dave/Steve Haze etc.'s win, 2FM's loss

Weekend drive is a daft name for a weekend show when there is no weekend commute

Not all of us work Monday to Friday 9-5 in an office.

    This too shall pass.

Listened to it for 5 minutes. Not for me, can't stand the man's droll monotone voice, it's not suited at all to a drive time format IMO.

Back to Matt Cooper for me

If today fm put on a music show in the Matt cooper slot they would be on a winner. I don't want to hear politics crap on my drive home

Never understood why today fm and newstalk have near identical drive time programmes!

Do people not drive anywhere at the weekend?

That may change when George Hook hangs up the earphones. It the logical thing to do.

Well I guess you could call any show a Drivetime show...

Shove Matt onto Newstalk (and remove Hook forcibly from the studio) and replace Today FM's offering with a music show. Kill the 2fm competition. Then send a nuclear bomb into Montrose and get rid of the station once and for all.

According to 2fm they only drive between 5 and 7 at the weekend.

The Drive By sound bite is driving me nuts and it's only 3 days in. Don't see them keeping it long term.

Did he admit to not paying his property tax on air this evening? Or was that supposed to be a joke?
Someone who is paid out of public funds admitting to not being tax compliant - that's not funny.

And probably against his terms of employment - so probably a joke.

A friend of mine worked for RTE for years. Her contract stipulated that she had to be and remain tax compliant - this included TV licence - on threat of dismissal.

This guy just isn't suited to the slot. Will was chirpy, engaging, enthusiastic about the music he was playing, lively (without being OTT ala Hector) and engaged with his audience. Hayes is none of the above! Maybe he was ok droning away on the mid morning slot if that was your cuppa tea but a drive show needs a bit of energy and enthusiasm which he doesn't offer IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,319 ✭✭✭Trick of the Tail

I agree, Hayes is smug and boring. And self-important.

And a nightmare if you happen to be female and he's had a couple of beers, allegedly.

2FM is like Fianna Fail toxic....it wont come back with this effort... Colm Hayes is bland, nineties style, and even at times suffers from Fentoneque dated links.

Will Leahy was hard done by -he was intelligent, sharp and a good sense of humour - and I am a man...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,338 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

Q: Which A did Duffy sing about?
    A: Warwick Avenue.

    ????

Ah here, Fenton is a different league compared to Hayes. Even if you consider Fenton's style "dated", he's the Real Madrid/Barcelona to Hayes' Tamworth Town.

I heard some of it on Tuesday. Terrible. He's not suited to this time at all. He was talking about having never been 'papped', and I heard "Man United" mentioned several times too.

    Back to Hook for me.

Colm Hayes wont last til the summer. He should be just on a Dublin station, as he has no clue of anything outside of the pale.

I turned it on for a bit on Tuesday and then today. It really isn't my cup of tea to put it nicely. I'm convinced though their strategy is to get as many Dublin voices on the station.... in the hope that Dublin people will listen to their brethren ... maybe the public really are that predictable and programmable?

Every time I dip into 2fm I feel there is something stilted about the station, this show is just a product of that. It feels like a station that lives in Montrose and lives for obscure celeb bytes on the internet.... lets not talk about the "text the show" fodder...

P.S. how inappropriate is the show title "Drive by", considering the way gangland has gone:rolleyes:

Why does he have to end every second sentence with "simple as"?

Will Leahy's drive time show was pretty terrible. Felt like it was always just thrown together and its segments were dated and lazy. The music was all over the fecking place too (although that's 2fm in general). But his show seemed like a complete masterpiece compated to that miserable, useless, overpaid **** Colm Hayes.

Whats the deal with playing the opening 3 notes of train drive by everytime he goes too an add? We know thats the name of the show!

I keep thinking they are about to play the song. It drives me mental :o.

    This show is awful stuff...
    His voice even annoys me...
I think on day one when he mentioned that his extended absence from the airwaves was the longest time off in 20 years (I think) felt as if he was trying to remind the little people of his "radio credentials"....
His daily change a shop/business/film name to make it funny is in no way NOT funny.
Finally his last man standing quiz format has been done to death...no need to keep explaining how clever it is.

I used to flick between stations on my drive home, 2FM now of the flicking list!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

has to be the worst position for colm hayes to let him loose on a drivetime show. if we wanted talk rubbish we would just go over and listen to matt cooper or newstalk. that quiz is annoying as hell and he thinks its great craic altogether. Dan Healy wont last long when the JNLR's come out showing what a great "success" his revamp has been.

Heard the Simon Cowell "Skit" yesterday evening where Colm kept coming up with different scenarios that Cowell's son would be doing and then playing a stock "Cowell" reply to each scenario. It was terrible. Bottom of the barrell stuff. Quickly turned over to Today FM

Heard that one myself. Was the nail in the coffin for me after the Hector and Will debacle.

So long 2fm, you've been a preset on my car radio ever since Ive owned one. Not anymore. You got reprogrammed yesterday to 98fm.

May god have mercy on my soul.

PS. I do think Dan Healy is going to have a record impact on 2fm figures. Just like Steve Staunton had a record impact when he took over as Irish manager.

Do people who want Hector and Will Leahy back not realise that the reason they got axed is because their ratings were terrible ? did you expect Dan Healy to leave all of John Mcmahons schedule intact and do nothing ?

But wasn't Hectors show up 12,000 listeners in the jnlr and Ireland’s Biggest Jukebox up 11,000 book on book to 125,000.

Not to mention Dan's comment about Hector in the Herald saying his job was safe and then bang, he's gone.

All I know I was a long time listener of 2fm, I'm on about Dusty Hayes, Ian Dempsey and Beat on the Street. But the station has gone to the dogs in the last few weeks and with that I'm turning the dial away. Its weird though as its a sentiment that I'm seeing shared with other people in the office and at home also.

You quote people and fixtures from the station that haven't been there for 15 years and then say it's gone to the dogs in the last few weeks?? They got rid of most of the above about 10-15 years ago.

They didn't get rid of all those things within the last few weeks. By that logic you haven't like that station for over a decade.

I used to listen when Will presented it as I like some music on my way home. The school disco at 6 was good and he was a decent alternative to all the current affairs talk.

I thought Colm Hayes said something to the effect that he would be presenting it "for a few weeks at least" . Was he just being sarcastic or did i misunderstand him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,647 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

Apologies. My references were to provide context in that I have listened to the station for decades. Throughout all its transitions. However, I am now a "disfranchised" listener. I no longer feel like 2fm caters to the whole country. It panders to appeal to current pop culture but fails somehow.

I think 2fm is suffering from an identity crisis, its suddenly wants to copy successful models like Spin 1038 or 98fm yet it still expects to retain its core listener.

I was one of those core listeners. Not anymore.

Dont get me wrong. Im not an obstacle to change. In fact I listened to Colm Hayes for years on morning breakfast shows and I liked him very well. But his transition does not work for drive time. The renamed the business game is just downright painful. The only thing the show inspires is serious face palming in every car in Ireland.

As for the breakfast show. I love Republic of Telly, ( heck I even have a thing for Ms. Maguire) but lads seriously....I've had bowel movements with more creative & engaging content.

I forced myself to listen for a few minutes yesterday in the car.

    Almightygad it's terrible stuff.

He played that weird Drive By sting right before a song... I thought they'd fooked up and started playing the wrong song and *panic stations* had to scramble for three seconds to get the right one going. Penny dropped then. Who in all seriousness thought that was a good idea?

How can someone who's been doing this for so long be so bad at it?

That's the nature of the game, perhaps you are no longer part of their target audience. If they gain two listeners for every one they lose the PD will be more than happy come jnlr time.

As has already been said he could not go in there and do nothing, If it fails he will be replaced but at least he would be leaving knowing he implement his vision for the future of the station and gave it his best shot.

Even though Hectors ratings were up 12k to 136k in his last book, He was still 30k below what Colm and Jim Jim had before he replaced them over 3 years earlier.
