    Hello all,
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good value place to get quality batteries? Halfords seems expensive although they do have a decent range. Local motor factors is very expensive!
    I live in Wicklow.
    Thanks!

Always get mine in Ashgrove just off Kill Ave in Dun Laograire, Think They have a branch in Bray and Arklow too.

Micks Garage, might not be the cheapest, but it's always nice when it lands on your doorstep, saves the hassle of going looking

the last battery I bought i needed a good high capacity battery for my '95 Passat diesel, it's hard to start at the best of times. I called around the local motor factors and none of them offered a battery with the same capacity as the Bosch Silver one Halfords offered. Also, when asked about a warranty, the guys at the factors generally mumbled "12 months" whereas Halfords had a 5-year warranty printed on the battery. The Halfords one was more expensive than the next nearest at the factors but I paid out, thinking of it as an investment. It'll probably outlast the car and can be used in any of my other projects.

Same. Halfords for the warranty (10% off with Axa card) or Micksgarage for convenience (basic Bosch for €59.50 including delivery is pretty good IMHO).

Just don't stride back into Halfords to claim on that warranty whilst carrying a different battery, they'll just laugh at you (ask me how I know - in my defence, I had three cars at the time and was doing a lot of battery swapping). :D

Halfords, You can have a good old browse there, and you can check on line beforehand for the specific battery for your car.
Last battery I got was for my mx5, I got it in Halfords because its specific to the car and the had 1 in stock.

Europower Battery Centre in Glasnevin is worth a call

Thanks for all the replies guys. I find the Micks Garage site very difficult to use. They want to force me to select my car's make and model, but I just want to see all the Bosch listings for a certain size and battery terminal arrangement. Another example of how trying to make things idiot proof ends up just making them more difficult!
I might pop into Halfords and see what they have got.I tried Europower, but they seem to only have some weird "Bull" brand on the go there.

What is the battery for? If you search by the group number it should be easier to find.

It's for a 1971 Mercedes 280SE which has a modern 3.0 Diesel engine. So, I need something which fills the battery tray for the 280SE and has the power to crank the diesel.

What battery group was the original (modern diesel)?

I'm not sure Kenny what a "Battery group" is, never mind which one the original battery is from. I'd just like to look at all the 12 X 7 inch batteries and choose which one I like based on price, manufacturer and technical specs...

The battery group identifies the size, terminal layout, and power rating.

You might find one the right size, but it might not have enough amps to crank that big 'ol smoke belcher.

I always buy my batteries in Bradshaws in Newbridge. They buy them by the pallet load so they can sell them that little bit cheaper and they have a really big selection. I have often gone down the back myslef to rummage out a battery the exact size and terminal orientation, when I didn't know exactly what number battery I needed.

Went into Halfords tonight. They are no longer stocking Bosch batteries. Moving over to Yuasa who, apparently also make the Halfords own brand ones!
Regardless, they had nothing with the correct size and power, never mind terminal layout!

MSL on the Pottery road have a deal on batteries at the moment and you might even get one with MB on it!!

Renew Tyres in Kilcoole are also good place for batteries

What are the dimensions, pole layout and output that you require? For a 3.0 diesel you will need a decent CCA! Would an S4028 battery fit? Amp Hours: (Ah): 95Ah Cold Cranking Amp: (CCA): 830cca Length: 306mm Width: 175mm Height: 225mm

This is used on a lot of 3.0 diesels — K-Partz in Kilcoole have them in stock for €110

If you give me the overall dimensions etc. I can match a Bosch battery for you.

    Hi, thanks!
I measured the battery tray at roughly 190mm X 310mm, so yes, the above would fit! Halfords recommended cca is 830, but their recommended battery is too long. Closest I could find with the correct dimensions in Halfords was only 700CCA so might struggle a bit.

Well, I found a gentleman by the name of Noel Carey in Kilmacanogue. He's a Bosch agent and sold me 3 Bosch S4 batteries, each cheaper than the Halfords own-brand equivalent! I paid 330Euro for all 3 of them including VAT. Very good quality product at the right price. Delighted!

Yuasa are, in my opinion, top class batteries. Or for people with 1950's cars, who may want to use the old rubber cased batteries with the exposed bars on top, GC Batteries up near Maguiresbridge in Fermanagh will sell/make you whatever you need. His name is George Coulter.
