    Hi,
I'm mid 50's male, cycle, walk fast and yoga once a week, 6 ft and weigh 88.5 kilos. Recently developed pain in outer right thigh which makes sleeping very difficult although neurofen helps. eased back on the walking and cycling and had to give up on yoga last week. Anyone had similar?

Sounds like your IT (iliotibial) band. I've had tightness in this area from squatting.

I'd recommend investing in a foam roller and training your inner thighs a bit more whilst easing up on anything that is causing the ache in your outer thigh.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to visit a physiotherapist once, just for a look.

    Thanks Deshi,
I have a foam roller but the pain is too bad.
I'll try and get to my physio tonight.

Went to physio today, he couldn't believe how localized it was. No pain down the leg or into the back. Recommended ice every 2 hours, anti inflamatories to allow sleep. Walk on Friday if possible and back to him on Tuesday.

I hope he didn't charge you for that advice! How long have you had the problem for?

    `Hi
    Interesting reply.
Noticed a change in my gait almost 2 weeks ago but no pain at the time. Tightened up more over the weekend, (Sat 15th) started to struggle a little to get out of car and my walking times increased by about 10%, last Wednesday started to notice it at night and couldn't sleep on my usual RHS. Took diffeine for the next few nights which helped me sleep but I had to prop a pillow under my knee as well.
Limping badly at this stage, the area was extremely sore with any pressure from fingers or sudden leg movement.
Went to physical therapist on Tuesday. He worked on me for 45 min, not just on the affected area, admitted that he was baffled at how specific the location of the pain was but pretty certain it was muscular. He mentioned a couple of other possibilities and indicated that if it worsened within the week I should see my GP.
I drove to work (40 min) and went through the usual struggle to get out of the car. However I loosened up walking form the car park to desk. Got an ice pack from OH nurse and used it a couple of times in work, drove home with it strapped to my thigh. Stayed on my feet for most of the evening, pottering around applied ice around 9 and noticed that pain had reduced, went to bed without diffeine and slept pretty well.
Today iced after shower, drove to work and got out of car with a lot less difficulty. Continued ice treatment for the day. Exit from car after drive home while not perfect was another improvement.
What advice should he have given me?

I took something completely different from your last post, I assumed (my mistake) he told you he couldn't work on you & sent you home with that advice!

Anyway, you have an insideous onset of pain which is effecting your movement! It could be nothing but at your age, the insideous onset of the pain & night pains are symptoms that need to be further investigated.1st port of call should be a GP referral (with the above symptoms)! Make 1 ASAP rather than waiting a week!
