Wisdom Teeth

    I have had a fair bit of Orthodontic work over the last 10 years or so (braces and permanent retainers) and on my most recent check-up visit to my Orthodontist he mentioned that my Wisdom teeth are beginning to move in. The top ones have come down, a bit awry, but no pain or problems. The bottom ones have barely peaked out - literally the tip of a tooth coming through the gum - but haven't moved in a while. He told me not to worry about them and that there'll be no need to remove them if they are not causing problems.

    However I think my teeth on the bottom are beginning to move slightly and maybe the wisdom teeth are impacted. I have no pain or symptoms - yet!

    I'm a bit nervous about the whole situation. I can probably stick a dental procedure but I am terrified that I may have to go under GA etc.

    Any advice or experiences?

    There is no conclusive evidence that impacted wisdom teeth cause your other teeth to become crowded.
    There are other reasons to have these assessed;
    Impacted teeth rarely are functional...
    Impacted teeth are difficult to clean and prone to infection, decay and can often damage the adjacent tooth...

    A lot of dentists ignore wisdom teeth until they cause obvious pain and infection. This is dangerous as a lot can go on silently in the meantime...

    Maybe get a second opinion??
    You don't need a GA, local anaesthetic or sedation is a good option.

    This is my concern! I'd rather get this sorted now because I think I've let it go on long enough. I don't want to wait for symptoms to show up!

    I don't think I could hack going under GA, that freaks me out :eek: Will the practitioner tell you what method he/she will use or does the patient have an input. What if I just wanted it to be a local and sedation?

    If you go to someone who only offers GA, then that is the recommendation that you will get...! If you want iv sedation, then ask for a referral to someone who does that.... You always have an input...

    I have a different query in relation to wisdom teeth (sorry to hijack the thread). I have had ongoing sinus, ear issues for the past 6 months(which i have had regular GP visits and an ENT visit over). I have heard with other people of wisdom teeth actually being the cause or part of the problem despite having no pain there. I have been to my regular dental surgery in Kerry and asked them to check my jaw (which they said is a small bit tight on the right side) but i never asked them about my wisdom teeth nor did they raise an issue with them. I do get an occasion swelling feel along my gums (which is more than likely due to my sinuses).
    The top 2 have not come down to the same length as my 2nd molar and the crowns are slightly angled facing to the back of the throat, i don't know is this strange or not.

    I would like to get them checked out for piece of mind and to rule them out as the problem more than anything else.
    Can anyone recommend somewhere (by pm) in Dublin city centre where i can get them checked inexpensively, would i need just normal x-rays or is panoramic xray needed.

    Thanks
