Would not think it will be on the ground long, once the ill passenger is off I'd imagine they will be in there way again,

Flight planned to depart to CDG at 1015. Of course that might be delayed but that's the time the plan is in for.

Where would you go to see it? Are there many good vantage points of the runway?

Head towards the aerospace and make a left just before the entrance to it. There's viewing area beside the runway.

On a side note I hope the medical emergency is ok and making a speedy recovery.

    This too shall pass.

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/us-military-plane-diverts-to-shannon-after-emergency-30037248.html
On Sunday, the world’s biggest passenger jet touched down in Shannon with the largest ever number of people to land on Irish soil at one time.

The Air France Airbus A380 Super Jumbo was en route from Los Angeles in the US to Paris when the crew declared a medical emergency and requested permission to divert to the mid west airport.

Emergency personnel were standing by for the aircraft when it landed at 9.11am and a female passenger was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

would Shannon be able to handle a regular one of these or was this only possible as a once off?

The airfield can handle it but they don't have a suitable gate at the terminal (double bridges, etc).

can they land and take off from Dublin also?

No, Dublin's runways are just a little too short.

    This too shall pass.

One of our national airports, not the only one.

Capital airport doesnt necessarily mean national airport.

    I sense some rings!

I asked a similar question recently regarding Dublin Airport and the conflicting information concerning the A380,

That's not correct. The A380 needs less runway than the 747.
I think the issue is the width/clearance of taxi routes and the angle of the turns etc. Also you need somewhere to park the beast, which is probably the biggest problem in Dublin.

I heard, not sure how true but heard it only needs 5000ft for MLW, it could always be parked where Air Force One was parked and stairs and buses for the pax. There's a fair few airports that use stairs and buses to disembark and embark the pax on it

Are there staircases linking top and bottom deck on an A380 or are they effectively independent.

    There are stairs, two sets.

For a diversion you only need steps to reach the lower doors as pax can get down to that deck inside the aircraft.

I'm sure Emirates have looked at DUB for A380 regular ops, but maybe the apron area is just too congested to facilitate it without causing disruption every time it comes in.

With the exception of the EI 747's, did any other carrier operate 747's on scheduled services to Dublin?

Is there any operator doing it currently?

So what are the chances of an operator putting an A380 on a scheduled route into Dublin?

Thats the thing about airliners, they are business's.

A search on Airliners.net brings up quiet a few 747's in Dublin, not sure about scheduled services though..

Why has a thread about an A380 landing in Shannon become all abut 747s in Dublin all of a sudden?

Attached is a pic of the A-380 taken from the Passenger terminal in Shannon last Sunday morning. The C-130 is between the two white aircraft on the right.

I got the pic as I was a passenger on EI120 from Orlando and which tried to land twice at Dublin Airport on Sunday morning around 7:30am, but encountered strong turbulence and was diverted to Shannon.

I am a fairly nervous flyer and it was a fairly traumatic experience, with the aircraft swaying quite strongly from side to side, as well as encountering frequent "air pockets" (the worst of it was shortly after the pilot had lowered the landing gear). Quite a few people got air sick and a small number were let off at Shannon as they were too sick/traumatised to continue.

Thanks, I was wondering why the EI A330 was in Shannon.

Dublin isn't ready for the A380 at the moment, irrespective of air bridges and strength of apron, runway etc, whilst you could possibly land one in an emergency, the runway isn't long enough for a fully fuelled 380 to take off, so you'd have to hop to Heathrow or Shannon to top up which makes no sense.

Yep, the missus was on that flight from Orlando too, and also commented on the severity as the wheels dropped for landing. Lots of people sick all round her mostly sitting in the middle of the aircraft. I think the wind gusts were hitting 55mph or so at the time. She's not generally a nervous flyer but the roar from the engines at the first go-around was bit of an unwelcome surprise. A friend is a captain at Emirates and he was flying to Boston around the middle of this month and never experienced anything like the turbulence crossing the Atlantic. Glad I stayed at home that trip!

I'd think not hearing a roar from the engines on a go-around would be a rather more unwelcome surprise!

I think this has been covered in a number of threads including this one, but for clarity, Takeoff from 10/28 incurs no restrictions on the A-380 up to the Long Haul takeoff weight of 510T, thats enough for flights of about 10:30-11 Hours.
