I was in the local nct last night and saw them failing people for having winter and summer tyres on the same axle even though they were the same size.Is this a new rule that the nct have brought in does anybody know ?

Rule was always not to mix tyre types.

Why would you have different tyres on the same axle? It's bad enough having diff brands/styles but totally diff spec is crazy. Too right it should be a fail imo.

More than likely scrap tyres the op got for 25e

    FYI

Winter tyres are only effective as such until the tread reaches 4mm and also on road with temps below 7c

In most countries in EU it's illegal to have different tyres within the same axle. They must be the same brand and model, and exactly the same tread type. Same speed and load index, etc...

But AFAIK in Ireland it's only illegal to mix radial and diagonal tyres, so I'm not sure why anyone on NCT would fail for having winter and summer tyre within the same axle, assuming they were both radial and the same size.

OK I took a look and indeed it's a fail.

    From NCT manual:
    1. Check that tyres on the same axle are of the same size, aspect ratio(Note 3 on next page) and type (i.e. cross-ply,
    radial-ply, run-flat, winter or summer).

By saying effective as such, I suppose you mean "on snow".
Because when driving on normal wet surface, winter tyres with tread less than 4mm, is the same effective as summer tyre with tread less than 4mm.

Im trying to imagine the rolling resistance difference between a good winter and good summer tyre. Surely the car would pull to the side of the winter regardless of tracking?

Irish people believe what it suits them to believe. If i tell them their winter tyre is causing the pull and therefore need a tyre before tracking can be done and Anto down the road says its grand then they believe Anto cause it suits them.

The general Irish motorist is an idiot ive found

A 'diagonal' tyre ? Do you mean 'crossply' ? I'd be stunned if any modern car had a crossply, or even if any modern tyre outlet (other than a specialist) even stocked them.
Some heavy machinery still uses crossplys, but cars ??
