Should RTE have a FM/DAB Sports Channel

lately 2FM has been used to broadcast sports events, live games and matches etc, including a sports show every evening at 7pm weekdays, this is disrupting normal shows and turning 2FM into a talk station, surely RTE could use a new channel on Dab or Fm to broadcast these events ?

There is no capacity for a seventh national FM network nor does RTE have the cash for the build-out required. DAB does not have national coverage and RTE pulled their DAB sports station during the trial period.

That's why they should use RTE RNAG. There's no need for a 24 hour Irish speaking radio station. And a few hours of sport wouldn't bother the masses.

Should just get rid of the RnaG station on the third network. Change it to RTE Radio 3 and have the shows from Derrybeg, Carraroe and Ballydavid on during the day and the odd documentary/series whatever and have sports and other shows on in the evening. As bad as listenership figures are during the day I hate to think of what they must be in the evenings.

Other thing would have RnaG 24 hours on DAB and in the Gaeltachts and have the third network on during the rest of the time. Using Kilkeveragh, Ballydavid, Maamclassach, Arranmore, Clifden and Casla for the 24 hour service would suffice.

A fifth RTE network in Gaeltacht areas only would, by comparison, be extremely cheap to build out - particularly if the review of what should and shouldn't be considered a Gaeltacht is brought through as it cuts the areas hugely.

Would make sense, but DAB is just not catching on here. Strange.

Coverage, lack of full equivalance with FM (no commercial stations bar what's on the two commercial trials) and lack of a compelling advantage in the extra stations unless you're in to dance music or classics realistically. UK DAB has their popular MW/LW stations in much better quality than AM provides as well as possibly compelling additional content in most areas

Given that RTE fills News Now with the twee rubbish of Nationwide at the weekends, I would have very little confidence that they would do anything of substance with a Sports Service.

Equally, there is no "need" for music stations. We could all target those channels that we don't listen to and say that we should be prepared to gut those services for live events.

The great compromise would be to put live events on RnaG - with coverage as Gaeilge. TG4 do a fairly good job with rugby.

The reality is that the listenership for RnaG is none existant. A wayto boost audiences would have been to put music shows(and I mean CHR or AOR type service) as Gaeilge or put RnaG on 567AM.

I could not see any take up of live sports as Gaeilge on RnaG, equally RTE needs to decide which is the Sports service be it 2FM, Radio 1 or Radio 1 LW

    So I don't exist?

Well what other way do you want me to word the reality of the RnaG audience figures? The chances of any changes to the output on the 4th network are also remote.

Getting back on topic - 5live and Talksports have shown how successful Sports radio can be, RTE should take note.

Neither or those are 24 hour sports stations, but I agree that RTE should do more sports slots.

Oh you exist all right but have far greater political clout than the numbers who would listen to a sports station rather than RnaG. Your niche is safe.

What about binning Lyric FM from FM?

The other thing to consider is what a sport channel would actually contain - first you have to buy rights and then come up with the budget from sufficient standard of both presentation and commentary. I don't think RTE really has the budget to justify such a channel.

A compromise which would be of no use to anyone who doesn't have a decent level of Irish.

At least on Television you can see what is happening. Irish commentary on the Radio would be of no interest to most people.

Listenership figures are much less relevant & far less of a priority when there's a public service remit to be fulfilled.
