I have a 07 Skoda Octavia VRS - 170HP and am looking to upgrade. I dont really want another VRS but something similar.

Budget will be approx 25K and have been looking at Audi A5 sportback and Honda Accord S-Type with similar HP.

    Any other reccomendations?

Seat Leon would be a natural progression from a VRS except its not a saloon

    Passat CC:

    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Volkswagen/Passat-CC/2.0-CC/37613812319494760/

Similar idea and underpinnings to the A5 Sportback. Very practical car with plenty of interior room and big boot. 170bhp version is rare enough but the 140bhp is fine and can easily be remapped to 180bhp for small money these days if need more.

    Alternative would be a Volvo S60 D3:

D3 is a 5 cylinder engine with 163bhp and feels surprisingly quick for a 2.0 litre diesel.

The "rare" 170bhp cc would be the exact same engine as his VRS.

The 140bhp is lower powered and even with a remap would probably still be the same , maybe even slower than his current car? ... Sure, his VRS with a remap would see around 205-210bhp which would leave the CC for dead.

Theres no two ways about it, if you're driving a VRS 170 and want a bit more oomph out of a diesel saloon, you'll need to be looking at the likes of bmw 330d's or A4 3.0TDI's.

op said a bit of oomph not a bit more oomph and said he is looking for similar so I don't think you are correct in condemning all similarly powered cars. I get the impression that he is quite happy with something in that power range but wants a different car.

I am not condemning any car. OP said he wants a car with oomph and said he is looking to "UPGRADE"

Interpret that how you will but I presume he means an upgrade in terms of engine/power as well.

140 bhp is the downgraded version of his current engine.

All im saying that to me an upgrade from a vrs would be along the lines of 3.0TDI quattro or 330d.

Yes I agree re the 140 but at similar bhp, there are many option for upgrade from the Octavia at similar bph as for me the Octavia bit is the weakest part of that package in terms of interior finish and exterior design. There is certainly much more class to an accord or Passat cc than any Octavia - in my opinion at least.

Some people here seem to think a diesel vRS is some sort of speed weapon. It's a 170bhp peppy diesel aimed at people who want a diesel alternative to a traditional hot hatch. I drove an A6 with the exact same engine and it was nothing special regarding performance, I ended up buying a 140bhp CC because in real world driving there was not enough difference to justify paying extra for a 170bhp version which is rare in the CC.

Also the OP mentioned a Honda Accord in his post which has only 150bhp from a 2.2 litre engine so recommending a 140bhp CC or the likes makes sense to me and gives the OP other options. From reading the OP's thread I also get the impression that he is not looking at 3.0 litre diesel cars. So imo any of those are an upgrade from a diesel vRS.

Agree with what you are saying. The accord S is around 180bhp I think though.

Irish Type S was sold in standard 150bhp and later 180bhp. 180bhp version is very expensive and rare as hen's teeth.

25k will get you an 08 535d saloon. Serious car

In diesel engine nothing comes even close to its performance. And tax is cheap for a 3.0 engine.

I'm going to ignore the saloon bit and recommend this. http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/lexus-ct200h-exclusive-sports-for-sale/6413978
These cars are petrol yet will do 60 mpg.

Well the OP currently drives a Skoda with Golf running gear and an A4 price tag so they may not object to a Lexus.

To be fair one could argue that an Audi has Skoda running gear but an Audi price tag.

Agree with you about the performance difference though. Chalk and cheese.

It's not far away and not common like the 5 series.

Octavia Vrs is a nice car, I wouldn't swap it for a similar bhp Mondeo, Passat, A5 etc.

Like a few have said already it's a good 3.0D like the Jag or just keep the Vrs.

Have to be looking at a Jag XF; a 535d is not dissimilar enough to Joe Bloggs than a 520d; if I was going to spend 25k on something in this range, the XF really is something in the metal (I'll stress that I haven't driven either a 535d or an XF though:))

Haven't seen them for sale even in the UK.
Besides, 25k for a Mondeo is a bit overkill, I'd rather have a Jag XF or a 330d at that price.

    Saloon, 25k

535d without question. Unless the OP wants to go down the petrol route as that will open many other doors.
