Irish 2 Euro Commemorative Coin to be released in 2016

After 12 years, Ireland is finally going to release a 2 Euro commemorative coin. The coin will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising.

Since the introduction of the Euro coinage in 2002 all member states have been allowed to release one 2 Euro commemorative coin each year (2 per year since 2013) commemorating an event of special national importance. In addition to these national commemorative coins, three common commemorative coins have been released by all member states in the years 2007, 2009 and 2012.

Ireland is the only member state never to have released a national 2 Euro commemorative coin.

This has so far been reported on a couple of coin collector sites and is listed on Wikipedia. Presumably the staff from the Central Bank will be able to confirm this at the coin fair tomorrow.

The Central Bank confirmed this today. (22/02/2014).

Well they did promise me back in 2005 that they would be doing this for 2016, I was asking were they going to do it for the 90th Anniversary in 2006 at the time. I should hope however that they will do more than just a standard circulation issue 2 Euro commemorative, at least a proof too and hopefully gold and silvers :)

I would hope that they would at least do a proof set as they did in 2007, 2009 and 2012 for the common commemorative releases. Something a bit different from the usual tiny gold coin would be nice too. Maybe something similar to the polar year set.

    This is a great idea!

Who would determine the re-design for the Commemorative coin, as a matter of interest as I'd imagine so many groups would be vying for their own? :)

How would this normally be done?

    Thanks,

As far as I know, the coin designs are always chosen from open competition. I have on two occasions seen ads placed in national newspaper inviting artists to submit their designs. A winner is then chosen from those designs by a committee.

I did read somewhere exactly how the subjects for each coin are chosen and then how the designs are selected but I can't remember where. I don't imagine that there are many artists submitting designs, as the same four people seem to have been chosen for most of our coins.

    Artist|Num of Coins
    Michael Guilfoyle|7
    Emmet Mullins|6
    Thomas Ryan|4
    Mary Gregoriy|3
    Ivan Mestrovic|1
    Rory Breslin|1
    Tom Fitzgerald|1

Just as a matter of interest. Here is a copy of the advert placed in the newspaper for the design submission for the Lockout coin.
