Sports item check in

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum but maybe someone here might know the answer or at least be able to point me in the right direction.

In October I fly home back to Dublin from Malta (Ryanair) and I want to bring my 2 bowling balls with me. The only issue is the cost to bring sports equipment on board is €100 where as having 2 bag check in (15kg and 20kg) is only €40.

My 2 bowling balls sit in a bag that is smaller than a gym bag. The dimensions are slightly less than: 17” W x 10” D x 9” H and the combined weight of both balls is 12.07kg (28lbs).

Can I just check this bag in as second luggage or does it HAVE to be checked in as sports equipment?

Again, apologies if this is the wrong forum - don't lynch me!

I would imagine you can just put them in the bag. They don't care what's in the bag as long as its not overweight or on the prohibited items list. In theory it's no different than putting 12kg of tennis balls in the bag, just because it is sports equipment doesn't mean you have to check it in as sports equipment. Maybe stuff the empty space with towels/clothes so the balls do not roll freely around the bag while the loaders are moving it, we wouldn't like to see one of them getting hurt and going on 'Strike' (sorry! Couldn't resist!)

"sport equipment" applies to oversized items, such as golf bags, skis, surfboards etc.. since bowling balls fit within reasonable dimensions, you check them in as a standard bag

He said Ryanair not Aer Lingus, Ryanair don't strike. You can put them in your normal luggage, just don't go overweight on your bag. If you have 2 balls, check in 2 15kg bags, 1 ball to a bag and then your other bits n pieces

I know Prof, but it doesn't work on an airline that don't strike. Now your pun was a good one :D
