OK maybe a silly question but in have put 4 new tyres on today and the drive home was very very slow. I had zero overtaking power on the roads and it felt like the car was taking an age to get up the gears.
Is this normal breaking in with new tyres ?

Check your tyre pressures and make sure they've been inflated properly.

Thats mad. Did you fit the correct size tyres? Perhaps the handbrake cable got pulled that little extra while the car was on the lift and the handbrake has jammed on somewhat. Otherwise its just a coincidence.

Changed from 205/60/r16 to 205/55/r16. Was told that it would make little or no difference.. But the power is gone from the car.. It had just been through an nct and everything but the tyres flew through..

Underinflated tyres will make car feel like it's sluggish.
Inflate to recommended pressure (it's usually on a plate in driver's door jamb or manual). If not sure put all tyres to 32 PSI, that should be about right.

It won't. If anything, the very slight lowering of gearing caused by that change in profile should make it very slightly livelier. As said, check tyre pressures, brake-binding, etc.

The problem these days with fitting tyres other than recommended sizes is how the ecu may react.
Your speedo will be out by an extra 2mph at 60mph
You are talking about approx .8 of a rolling inch less per wheel revolution.
Shouldn't affect you much but it is possible.
The links underneath should give you a good idea of sizes.
