First car

Hi, I'm nearly 17 and I have passed my theory test already. I'll be getting my provisional soon and I'm just wondering what would be the best first car I could get as a first.
Budget is about 5 to 8 thousand.
I can already drive so that's a bonus.
I'm talking total cost 5-8 grand ( car insurance and tax etc included).
    Thanks any suggestion appreciated.

Depends what route you want to take. But whatever the route, insurance is going to take a MAJOR chunk out of the budget.
You can go newer, smaller petrol engine, such as an astra/golf/focus etc or
An older VAG based engine such as a Tdi passat/golf etc (which will really send the insurance costs up)
Depends if you want a higher powered car or a smaller engined one.
Will you be insured on your own or as a named driver?

I'd be looking along the lines of a Ford Fiesta 1.25litre, a great little car with a nippy engine. My sister has one for nearly 4 years now and not a bother from it. Something like these are well within budget:

Obviously a yaris will be suggested but OP what sort of car are you interested in. Have you any hobbies which will mean you want a big boot. Are you very tall or small. A six and a half foot lad in an old suzuki alto wouldnt be good.
Do you plan to do around town or motorway sort of driving?

Did you ever hear of punctuation?
Not all peugeots are unreliable. Their XUD diesel engines were even used by Toyota so it seems like you are talking through your ****.

I had to learn fast no back windows.
I hit it off alot of walls!
Haha your gona bang it off something!!
Dont go over priced on it, keep it cheap your only 17 no need to be gettin into debt.
If i had known what i do about cars now when i was 17 a bit of advise: keep the same car for 2 years, don't swap sell or buy a diffrent one.
Premiums will rise on insurance and you could end up not been able to afford it and loose important ncb half way through the year.

Sorry, I had to do it, I couldn't read it the way it was.

At 17, I highly doubt the OP will get insured on a Starlet by themselves. Maybe as a named driver on an existing policy. Grand to start in too.

Anyways, what a load generalised sh*te. Highly professional advice right there

MK2 Yaris. '06 onwards should be in budget including insurance. Dirt cheap to run. I'm 6'3" and have no problem driving my missus' one. As it happens, my brother who is the same height was able to sit behind me with a bit of legroom in it. Don't buy a 3 door though, you'll never sell it on again. No-one wants them.
They are selling for 2k less than the 5 door versions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Moneymaker

+1 to the Fiesta. They are super cars and the 3 door looks quite good imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

Thanks dgt, makes more sense now that you translated it into English.

I know starlets are reliable but I am not sure if they are the best first car you could get. They are an old machine. Old machines dont have the safety equipment of cars from the last 10-15 years. As you are starting out you are more likely to be in an accident so just in case I would go for something a bit newer and safer just in case something happens.

OP this is not a dig at you anyone can have an accident at any time. I had one myself in my fourth year of driving. You are more likely to have one starting out. I had a few close calls when I was younger.

man anything french is crap pure crap , up till around 06 newer common rail 1.6 diesel ..

from experience of buying them there pure ****e.. the German petrols also pure ****e, and there made to fall apart.
the kid needs steering in the right direction he needs to buy a Japanese litre to a 1.4 if he can stretch a civic great buy and nice car ..but anyone that thinks anything but the japs are decent petrols are just clowns vw ****e on a stick seriously the new fiat apart from the mk 4 tdi .. japs build great cars to last with good mpg and cheap parts and labour .
just look up done deal at the older cars see the comparison of jap cars to the rest of the muck out there

i currently own a toyota best built car in the world

The Civic, and Honda's in general are good reliable cars, but insurance is shocking on Civics. A yound lad in work was able to insure a Merc C180 1.8 a lot cheaper than a 1.4 Civic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

By the way Fiats of the last while are very good cars. Some French cars like the citroen c1 and 107 are actually a toyota aygo underneath. Are these pure ****e too.

OP I strongly urge you to ignore this lad as he doesnt know his arse from his elbow. I think he is just trolling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Get insurance quotes before you buy OP, not the other way around. Then that will narrow your choice down a fair bit!

The young lad has said he's about to get his first provisional. I'm going to guess that at some stage (more than likely most of the time) he's going to be driving on his own, which of course is illegal.
He doesn't need to be getting pulled in a 14 yr old Civic every time he passes a garda car.

Hmmmm not the loom what could it be?

Oh I know the timing belt's out a tooth!

    Oh thank you mr vw.

Go back 10 years cars are bomb proof.

Im 18 now and on my first insurance. There's a list below of insurance companies that I got quotes off.
    axa.ie
    fbd.ie
    devilquote.ie
    Pat Britton insurance
    Aviva
    Hoperdolan
    First Ireland
    Crane crane insurance
    Asgard
    Willis
    http://topquote.uat.site.mobi/site/modified-car-insurance

I got my insurance for 1000 with creane and creane so I would recommend them on a 1 litre polo. They also gave me a quote of 1300 for a golf tdi which is unbelievably cheap. If you have any lessons done make sure and mention it. Makes a massive difference to the price.

Were them quotes as a named driver, or on your own and what type of cover? Just out of curiosity. :)

On my own name. Kind of hard to believe. Btw I have a full license but it's still cheap. It's just third party because that's the only policy they offer in cars under 98 I think. Car has to have NCT aswell.

I am not getting on your back but a lad starting out is going car shopping soon and is looking for advice. This forum is generally a good place to get it. Posters like dgt, GeorgeDalton, Colm_mcmm, bazz and even Mad_lad amongst others are well versed in motors generally and can offer useful advice. You have taken over this thread talking rubbish. The OP cant get good advice as you are now the focus of the thread, And just so you know Fords, Mazda and Volvo use peugeot/citroen engines in their cars and renaults diesels are made by nissan. So does this mean fords, mazdas, volvos and nissans are all rubbish too? You really have a lot to learn.

I won't be a named driver, it's just going to be me insured on the car.
    Thanks for all advice.
