Robotron 2084 Themed Bartop - Complete

    Hi All,

Just thought I'd post a few pics of my recently completed Robotron 2084 themed 2 Player Bartop.

It took me the guts of a year to complete, competing with work and family life, but I am happy with the end product.

Its running MAME and MALA frontend

Any comments or observations please feel free to offer...:)

I was going into arcades from the early 80's to the early 90's and the games of that era are those that I enjoy. I like Robotron, hence the theme, but am brutal at it.

I hope to put a build thread up over on BYOAC when I get a chance.

    Thanks

I found the original artwork online and altered it in Adobe Illustrator (mainly the CP) to suit the 2 player set up and the dimensions of the unit. I had access to a large B/W printer so was able to get paper prints done for mock up till I had it spot on. Got a printer local to me to colour print the CP and Bezel on vinyl sticker and the Marquee on a lightbox paper (very reasonable price too!)

I would give my right arm, actually that's render it pointless, I'd give several of other peoples right arms for a dedicated Robotron cab, it is simply my favourite game of all time.
Maybe, given the times we live in, I'd hide a few other twin stick wonders in there as well, Smash TV or Total Carnage, maybe see if a Geometry Wars and it's sequel couldn't be hacked in there...
Now, Kerb has one of the old mini Taito cabs in his garage, turning to dust..... I wonder.....

Sweet, any more details of the build or photos during the build? Tips for others if they wanted to make one?

I'm in the process of putting together a build thread, I'll link it here when I have it done. There will be a good few build photos.

As for tips, there are probably many more people on here that have more build experience than me, this is my first shot (full size cab next :)), but a couple that spring to mind are

Router, router, router, Get a router, practice on scrap first, its an essential tool, use it for the woodworking but also for the button and joystick holes in the plexiglass

Don't be afraid to change things to suit the end product. I changed the shape of the side panels late enough on in the build as they werent working out for the J1 joy position

!!!! Dont use a heat gun to bend your CP plexiglass over your cp whilst the side panel T moulding is in place - cue new T moulding order !

Well done, what a great looking machine.

May I ask approx how much this type of project would cost?

Assuming that the hours put in are not costed and that you have the carpentry tools etc already this would cost approximate €300 to €400 euros.

Cheers tigersIron, you have got me thinking :-) Da wife said no to a full scale cab so I wonder if I arrived in the door with a 1/3 size, what's the worse thing that can happen :)
