I know someone with a defender that removed the prop shaft because the rear diff was nackerd. They failed him, said it was a safety issue.

Can't see how it's unsafe, there is plenty of front wheel drive cars on the road and they pass them. He was going to argue with them over it and I haven't seen him since then so I don't know how he got on.

Yea I heard that. I don't understand how they could fail people on it. The jeep will function grand with 2wd and I don't understand how it's unsafe.

Well at least they wont ruin your transmission if they put it on the 2wd rollers!
I don't think it should a problem, had to pull the prop shaft off a yoke after an NCT "4wd plus rollers" issue alright though.

The NCT can only fail on their pre-defined tests,

    http://www.ncts.ie/NCT%20Manual%20Revise%20May%202012.pdf

All I can find is on page 57 (88th page):
2 Any drive line component liable to lock up or break away.
    3 Askew, damaged, or worn.
    4 Worn.
5 Bolts, nuts or studs loose/missing.
    6 Lock tabs missing.
7 Obviously worn or grease boot missing or torn.

I would argue that as the shaft is missing it renders a pass as it cannot fail if its not there

The usual problem is the viscous coupling begins to seize up - and if allowed to continue can damage the IRD and the rear differential.
As said above it will probably come down to the tester on the day .
Two things I have been told about 2WD is that the vehicle seemed lighter on fuel and not as steady on the road . But that was only one drivers opinion .
I presume the shaft didn't come with the vehicle - if its failed on that you will need a shaft to go through . Maybe you could 'borrow' one for the day . If you buy second hand it I presume you would get some warranty - you can do a rough check on the viscous coupling by clamping one end in a vice and trying to turn the other end . Will be stiff but there should be some movement .

Yes there are places that repair dem. I'd recommend getting a second Hand one from a breakers over getting it repaired.

I had a 2004 one. Landrover mechanic told me to take out the prop shaft at the time as I did not need 4WD. Went through 2 NCT's without issue.

Shafts are repairable - but a reconditioned VCU will cost about €300 and they can be difficult enough to change .
So your best bet would be SH - but only after you have tried getting it through the NCT first and failed .
