Already vaccinating here for bvd, ibr and salmonella. Have never vaccinated for lepto. This yr my advisor strongly recommends starting as I have young children, and a student doing his 3 mts here. Have never had a problem with lepto, and Munster herd health milk results always show it not the be a issue here. Do I leave well enough alone or start now?

We don't vaccinate for it but I see where you're advisor is coming from. Lepto is a really nasty bacteria and can cause meningitis. I work with bacteria for a living and I'm quite happy playing with salmonella but not so sure about lepto.
That said I don't know if you really need to vaccinate but you do have a good vaccination programme and it may be worth doing it when you're doing everything else already.
Also the risk is really quite low of your children picking up lepto from the cattle it might give you peace of mind. If your asking on here it's something that you're at least thinking about.

I think you're asking an impossible question on two levels.

One. If you ask anyone who might be held responsible for their advice they can really only say to do so, for the human health reasons mentioned above.

Two. If you're herd is 100% clear of lepto (hard to know, a hypothetical situation here- for discussion), then should lepto arrive you'll get the worst possible hit as there will be no pre-existing herd immunity.
If you have lepto proven to be present, you'd be silly not to vaccinate.

So, summarising all that, there's not much justification for not vaccinating.

The only person who can decide it's not worth vaccinating is yourself.

    IMO.

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It's to promote critical thinking.

If it were me, I'd sooner vaccinate for lepto than for bvd. Bvd should soon be a thing of the past, while lepto is a solid curse.

Thanks for the replies lads, some interesting posts there. Think I'm swaying towards the side of vaccination at this stage, would want to make my mind up pretty soon. Just hate introducing another vaccination, herd health and fertility are generally v good here (85% calved in the first 6 wks, 10% empty after 11 wks).
